Lumberjack Roll
What? Two posts in one day?
Last Saturday Keith Wikle found a big old timber floating in the lake. Of course any big long floating bit of wood demands that a kayaker worth his salt tries to roll with it. Add a bit of editing on my part and you have the lumberjack roll! Click Here!
Welcome to Wisconsin Keith!

So Keith took the job in Madison? Great! Now I need to make sure I get a chance to run some rivers with you and him this summer and get more people addicted to whitewater!
In regards to the reenter-reattach skirt-and roll, I am skeptical of its usefulness. Every time I have performed this manuever, I have ended up with the same amount of water in the cockpit as when I did a standard reenter and roll. I think it’s better to quickly reenter and roll and then worry about skirt/pumping/etc.
Have fun at Door County!
Cool. I have a whole list of fun things that we’ve used to roll during the pool sessions that the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club does in the winter:
Soccer ball
Kickboard
“Noodle” (the styrofoam kind not the kind you cook)
Half paddle
Spatula
Hockey stick
Head and torso dummy of the kind used in lifeguard training
but somehow the mad creativity doesn’t transfer to our outdoor paddling.
There has been talk about whether you could use a small chunk of ice but somehow none of my NYC paddling gang has ever been inspired to try THAT particular move. Hm – maybe you Wisconsin paddlers aren’t quite so wimpy though…
good grief I’ve been busy lately. Hoping things settle down & I can start reading more but that’s not terribly likely until November or so!
