Stupid Kayak Tricks
Posted by derrick on August 29, 2005
One great way to improve your skills is to get out and do stupid things in your kayak. Not the stupid things that get you killed, just the ones that make you look like a total moron to the folks walking along the beach. With that in mind I’ve added two new video clips. Videos 2 & 3 under the heading “fun stuff” The first is called “What the ??” and is a fun little trick where you spin your paddle over your hull in mid-roll. Once in awhile i would hit the deck at the wrong angle and send the paddle straight up into the air. The next clip called “catch it on the other side” is another stupid kayak trick. Not really too hard once you figure out how to get your paddle to stay by the boat when you roll. Oh, and unlike the stunt videos you certainly can try this at home!Justine C. just got back from her trip to Orkney, a group of remote and pretty islands off the North coast of Scotland. She added a bunch of nice pictures here & be sure to read the new journal post as well. Check out the shape of that Rockport Kayak!
Well, that’s it for today. Happy Christmas!

Looks like you’ve been having some fun down there rollin’ and videoin’. Sure lot’s of footage with the GreenLand stick!!!! Have to try those “Stupid” tricks this weekend. Are those “ACA” approved rolls?
Looks like some fun play….So how’s that foam block and seat working out? Your Blue Explorer sure has taken a beatin’ Maybe you should sell that one and keep Mary’s yellow Explorer EH?

Noticed that GP getting preference, eh? Yeah, I’d better start working with the Euro again.
Maybe they would qualify for “out of set up position” rolls. Sure would wake up the IT anyway!
My boat’s going to have a cool keel strip now! Can’t trade it in! Actually I really like the new out-fitting. Mary’s boat feels pretty sloppy to me right now. But who knows what will happen after we get the Acuta.
Fun stuff! Boy do I have some new rolls to show you and some tales to tell. This past weekend was too amazing for words. Despite my constant insistence that I was a whitewater kayaker, I found myself falling completely in love with the traditonal rolling SOFs as well as the tuiliqs. The instructors were amazing (both as people and as teachers) and I was amazed at their skills. I thought I knew a lot of rolls going into this weekend but I think I must have added another dozen to the list. I have a LOT of things to work on!
Coincidentally I got a chance to paddle with Dick from Milwaukee (Romany with the keel strip). It’s too bad that you weren’t there this weekend as Dave Braun sold his carbon Anas Acuta at a killer price which I’m sure you would have jumped at had you been there. On that note, I’m also selling the Betsie Bay. I’m trying to get in touch with Peter Strand to have him make me a replica of Cheri Perry’s rolling qajaq (which in turn is a replica of Maligiaq’s qajaq) and I need the funds for it. (My new rule is if I buy a boat, I have to sell a boat!)
On a seperate note, being the boat whore that I am, I must have tried out a dozen different kayaks. I finally got some seat time in Cheri’s Impex Outer Island (after hogging her rolling SOF and her rolling stich and glue qajaqs all morning) and I was amazed. It is the easiest rolling production kayak that I have ever been in (Dick’s Romany being a close second). Heck I even managed to elbow roll it fairly consistantly. I still hope to own one down the line at some point but that might not be for some time. I’ll have to write up a full recap of this weekend at some point and email it to ya!
