Patches

Clearly I remember Pickin’ on the boy
Seemed a harmless little f**k
But we unleashed a lion
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady’s breast
How could i forget – vedder

I love stickers. If you’ve seen my Jeep window or even my Kayak for that matter you’ll see I’ve got stickers everywhere. I’ve got stickers for Lendal, NRS, Friends of Devil’s Lake, NDK (which I had to create myself with a Welsh dragon & spare Romany sticker), Rutabaga, and tons more. Lendal still hasn’t come up with a “Nessie” sticker for me yet. Bums!! Now patches on the other hand never have a good use beyond the scouts.

Yesterday I got my little 4 star certificate in the mail and it came with a pretty little blue and yellow patch. It’s sure nice of the BCU to send a “4 star” patch with my shiny new certificate. And as much as none of us like to admit it, we do like those little rewards. However, we also know we’d look a real fool if we actually sewed our BCU patches on our paddling jacket or PFD. The ACA patches are even worse because you have to take the extra step to provide your membership number and buy it outright! Yeah, that’s right, the ACA does not give you a free patch! Well, there goes your whole reason for certifying with the ACA!! Suffice to say I don’t have an ACA patch. (I do have a sticker though)

So, then I started wondering, what did you do with your patch from the BCU? Did you put it in a drawer so you can haul it out on occasion when no one is looking? Did you sew it on a Jacket you never where in public? Did you toss it in the bin? Did you frame it with your certificate? Did you repair a hole on the butt of some old jeans? Hey, this is a good question. I think about the poor guy who went through the trouble to sew his patch right on the breast of his PFD only to get snickered at when he showed up at an event. We don’t want THAT to happen to anyone do we?? To be fair I can remember the first year I took up kayaking and I saw a guy with a big ACA patch sewed on his chest and thought “Wow! he must be really good!”. I was really impressed. Funny how that changes.

Today is the Annual North East Sea Kayakers Christmas party. We had hoped to make it, but we had a little issue come up. No big deal, but we won’t be able to make it up for the Kayak & Bear fest. Ah, Beer fest? No, bear fest, Packer game today you know! Go, Pack, Go. . .

Ask for several more. Wear the lot with proud!

  • Richard says:

    I think Wenley is snickering!

  • Ignacio-Wenley Palacios says:

    Certainly not. I’m dead serious.

  • bonnie says:

are we sure we didn’t hear even a little bit of a giggle there?

  • derrick says:

oh, damn! He was kidding?? Now I have to find one of those stitch breaking thingies!!

  • bonnie says:

dontcha hate it when that happens?

  • Ignacio-Wenley Palacios says:

This disregard for those precious patches is amazing.
As for me, should I pass a 4 star Bcu assessment I would beg the Bcu to consider granting me a Bcu naval officer hat.
Now seriously, is there Bcu approved casual gear online shop?

  • derrick says:

BCU logowear? Hmmmm. Ladies knickers with the BCU logo on the front and “Learn To Paddle” on the back! Ouch!! Did I say that?? Must be feeling out of sorts. . “Paddling Coach”. . . “Teach me to paddle”. . .?? Oops, wrong blog. I know, I’m feeling cheap now.

Actually here’s a challenge. . scour the internet for a picture of someone actually wearing their BCU star patch. :) We could send them a bouquet! Maybe a nice box of chocolates!

Now if I could get a nice leather Jacket with the NDK logo on it, I’d dole out the cash. I’ve got the hat, but since I look stupid in hats Mary has to wear it.

Might sell…not necessarily among boat folk but they might sell among a certain segment of the populace.

    Ahem.

A-ny-hoo, here is a lovely picture of the chair of the BCUNA and his wife & partner in crime – er, I mean business partner – and THEY aren’t wearing ‘em. I’m not looking anymore. Although that’s a mighty sharp new PFD he’s wearing. Maybe he just didn’t transfer the patch yet. Yeah. Maybe that’s it…

Derrick, if I get Bill and Janice in trouble it’s all your fault and I’m never commenting here again.

    Oh…wait…you might like that.

How about Justine? Does she wear one? I checked my favorite BCU-folk website (AKT is basically where I go when I need lessons, they’re really really awesome, I didn’t really look for too long just scanned some of their pix), now it’s somebody else’s turn.

I do notice that my blog has been down all evening. Perhaps I am being punished by the Kayak Deities, Welsh branch, for my disrespect.

Truth is, I’m just sort of embarrased to wear mine, feel like it would be showing off somehow. Seriously, I figure if I’m paddling well, my skills speak for themselves, and if I’m having an off day & do something really stupid then it would just make me look even stupider if I’m wearing a patch that’s supposed to mean I’m good.

    Ok everyone,

Please send roses & chocolate to Bill & Janice at Atlantic Kayak Tours! Sign the cards, “Because you’re not wearing your star patches, but Bonnie thought you might. . ” LOL!!

I saw your blog is down. See, I stir up trouble and YOU get banned. Ha! Wonder how that works? Well, you can always come play over here. Your always welcome. :)

Agh! You ARE gonna get me in trouble! :D

    But WAIT!

Hey everybody look, is that a star patch on Russell Farrow’s PFD????

Sweetwater being the 2nd outfit that springs to my mind when I think of places likely to feature a high concentration of BCU people, I looked there after browsing the AKT site for a while. I’ve never been there (although I was lucky enough to have a private lesson with Nigel Foster when he was up teaching at New York Kayak)but a couple of my MKC partners ran a trip down there with them and everyone had the most marvelous time.

  • derrick says:

It sure looks like one. Who’s going to email him and ask? If it is, he’s going to drive up to Wisconsin and slap me upside the head!

I recall seeing one person several years ago at the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium that had his BCU patches, and lots of other stuff, all over his PFD. I thought then that it looked mighty strange, a make that goofy. As to myself, I have my in my dresser drawer, along with a bunch of Boy Scout patches that some are now 40+ years old! And, I do have a NDK polo shirt as well as a ball cap–love ‘em both and wear frequently. The BCU does have a polo shirt too, but haven’t seen one up close and personal–if I did I’d have one I’m sure.

  • Richard says:

In this picture, Ron Smith has some patches on his PFD, but I can’t tell what they are.

  • derrick says:

Yeah, but Lori doesn’t. . and that’s the important thing. :)

it does not look like bcu patches though.

Hi all. I am training with Russell next Monday. I will let yu know if he is wearing his patch.

Personally I was thinking of putting my QajaqUsa patch night next to my BCU 3 star right next to my Leave no trace patch right next to my Team Zero patch on the back of my pfd. I want to wear “colors” just like the bikers do!
