Sea Monkey Arcade
Outside’s the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain’t going out there no more – springsteen
Good morning. How are you doing today? I hope all is well, you’re not too stressed over work, the holidays and the price of heating fuel. We need to get away from all that rot now and again don’t we? So let’s think about something else for about 2 minutes. . .
So have you seen Namco’s Rapid River arcade game? Basically you have a seat for two molded to look like a big yellow river raft. Placed in front of you is a giant low resolution screen with images of 2 pixelated rafters crashing through white water courses of various difficulty. You control the game with a big heavy, clanking steal handled paddle. Pretty cool eh? Well, you only have 2 moves; paddling forward and ruddering. Actually I was surprised that with a little experience behind a paddle you can get quite far in the game. However, after beating around their animated course for a few minutes you can no longer feel your arms. Its a real heart-pounder! I wish I had that game in my living room where I could play it without feeling stupid in front of a bunch of 12 year old future hip-hop stars.
Back in 2001 you could get a pretty cool kayaking computer game called “Kayak Extreme”. In the game players could race on authentic whitewater courses, alpine streams, African rivers and more. You could even play on those reverse gates that Rebecca Giddens made look so easy. By the time I found out about it, my computer was too modern to run it and the game was never upgraded. I think we need to nag EA Sports to come up with a new one.
So what is a sad ex-gamer, now kayaker going to do? Well, I guess we all run over to Kayak Sea Monkeys and play their nice collection of Archaic Arcade Games. I’m still number 9 on Asteroids!! What to do? What to do?? Blog?Asteroids? Blog? Asteroids?. . . Oh wait, maybe I should really do some work today!?? . .
-dPS. JB are you going to send me you’re un-tainted review of This Is The Sea II??
