PostHeaderIcon Queen Of Kayak

Who is the Queen of Kayak you may ask? Well Anna Hemmings of course. According to Canoe Focus Magazine world champion marathon canoeist, (kayaker for those of us on this side of the Atlantic). Anna Hemmings recently received her prestigious award at the “star-studded” Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards in London. The Awards honor outstanding achievement in women’s sports in 10 categories and include a public vote for Sportswoman of the year. This comes 2 years after Anna was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Tell me she’s not an inspiration!!

Ms. Hemmings must be proud to have her picture right under the big bold type that reads ” Queen of Kayak”, but karma also finds balance as we know. If you look at it another way her picture is the first thing you see after you read the column header. . . “Paddle This”. . .

Anna’s Website is at http://www.annahemmings.co.uk/

Oh, and how do you get to be King then?

PostHeaderIcon DPB…Dip the Poor Bastard

Some people should learn to never send me a smart a** email! They have to know that I’m just going to publish here anyway. . .

So in response to my post about CPR, this came from Dick in Milwaukee. . .

Perhaps it is time for some insightful EMT-kayaker to do research on DPB…Dip the Poor Bastard. This is based on the literature showing resucitation after cold water drownings. It would only require a tow rope (which we should be carrying anyway), some weights (which could serve as ballast until needed and a themometer (optional in winter).

The weights need to be rigged so they can quickly be attached to the victim who is then dumped over the side and sunk to the thermoclime (in warm weather, the themometer can be used to establish the necessary depth).

Nicely frozen and preserved, the rescuer can take his or her time carefully paddling to shore. Upon arrival, the rescuer goes ashore, leaving the victim safely in the arms of the cold sea, and bums a quarter to call for help. When a defibrillator (or coroner) arrives, the vic is pulled ashore to recieve all the things modern medicine has to offer.

Now, how to get a grant. Hmmmmm?

Anyone getting their check book out?? He’d also like a couple volunteers. . .

Remember to pack up your kayak, Canoe, rubber floaty, or whatever you go on the water in; and bring it along to Lake Columbia on Jan, 1, 2006. We’ll paddle around a bit until we get really cold, then we’ll all head off to the local and get really warm. In this case the “local” is the world, well maybe not world,. . . City Famous Cactus Club! This is one place were you dress for the air. The water near the landing may be in the mid to upper 40’s but as you paddle closer to the powerplant the water temperature can climb into the 80s. It’s hard to guess what the Air temp will be like, but 0 – 30F or Below seems like a reasonable range. Yeah, we may get lucky and have 75 and sunny, but I’m sort of doubting it.

See you there!

PostHeaderIcon Mary, Gryphon, & Santa’s Cows

Here’s Mary & Grphon and our dearly departed Greyhound Willow, in 2001. Looks like some of my old family pictures from 1967. Yikes!Thank you to ABS for their great sign along the interstate which read. .

“Santa’s Cows are coming to town. . .”

However I’d also like to express my profound shock at the other side of the sign which I read on the way back. . .

“I saw mama kissing Santa’s Cows”

What A World, What A World!!

Happy Christmas!

PostHeaderIcon Paddler’s Park

Here’s This From John Wallace of The North East Wisconsin Paddlers; What a great gift for the group. If you get the Manitowoc HTR, check out page A6 of Thursday’s (12/22) edition. If you don’t get it, let me recap:

At this week’s Two Rivers City Council meeting approval was given to a request initiated by Phil Rohrer through the Parks and Recreation Department to name the 27th Street Boat Launch to “Paddlers Park.” Quoting from the HTR article:

“Kayaker Phil Rohrer made the request because the facility is used by the Green Bay Paddlers, which teaches kayaking in Two Rivers.”

“The city approved the request because the facility is underused because of low water conditions; low water makes it ideal for launching small watercraft, canoes and kayaks; there have been several successful kayak events held at the location and renaming will improve promotion of the park.”

Another great accomplishment For Phil Rohr and certainly a statment about the city of Two Rivers commitment to paddlers.
