You may remember Alison competed in Greenland this year and did quite well. You’ll find her next at the Delmarva Paddler’s Retreat October 6-8. For more information about Alison and what she’s been up to just visit her website, www.goingtogreenland.com. Did she blow that last one?? For shame! :)

Hmmmm, if you miss a roll with a paddle, but then come up with a hand roll, did you blow it? Wish my failed rolls turned out that way!

  • Alex says:

Alison’s in a Pete Strand rolling qajaq (same as mine). In that particular kayak, since the foredeck is so low, it make storm rolls (and any forward finishing rolls) a bit more difficult if you don’t have an agressive hipsnap. Alison was attempting to finesse her storm roll which failed and she had to do a layback hand roll to recover which is an easier roll in that particular boat. Personally, I can only finesse forward finishing rolls in my Silhouette and I have to really snap my forward finishing rolls in the Strand qajaq.

i am going to sit in a corner in a huff.
and then find a nice pool to practise rolling in!

Yah, I’m going to meet Alison (and others) at Delmarva this year! I can’t wait to walk and talk among the gods. Will I be able to breathe the air in heaven…?

  • derrick says:

but surely you ARE one of the gods!?? How shall they stand in your glow??

    have a great trip!!

  • Alison says:

Yeah, Derrick you’re right. I totally blew that one. No real reason for it — but I gotta love Alex for trying to cover for me!

I didn’t know that video was out. A friend took it at the tail end of a good 3hr practice session. He sent it to me and suggested I post it on my site or U-Tube. Since he only filmed a couple basic rolls (and I blew one of them) I opted to ignore the footage and pretend it didn’t exist. I had no idea he posted it until just now. Oh well. Now I guess my only option is go out and make a good video.

Michael, it’ll be good to meet you at Delmarva. Bring your guitar!
    Cheers.
    Al

    Hi Alison!

. . . and then I had to go and find it and post it here as well! :)

Well, a couple weeks ago I posted a clip of myself blowing a bunch of rolls. . and I can’t even go back and improve on it! . . . not yet anyway! :)

Alex is a nice guy isn’t he!?

Alex is awesome. I haven’t met him yet but we’ve emailed a few times and I really like him. I love his videos — he always seems to be having so much fun. — I must admit, you Wisconsin paddlers have made quite a good impression on me. Hope we cross paths sometime. Perhaps QTC next year. I’ve gotta go to that one!

Here’s a little kayak surfing video a friend of mine, Mitch Mitchell, posted. He runs Coastal Kayak in DE during the season and then winters in FL. Cool guy. Lots of fun. Watch the whole thing — the ending is pretty amusing.
