Sunday we went underground. Sorry, no kayaks involved. About an hour’s drive from our base in south central Wisconsin is an interesting little cave called “Cave of the Mounds” located near a town called Mt. Horeb. You can’t really say much bad about Mt. Horeb. The fact that they have big wooden trolls on every street corner waiting to come to life and devour you keeps you content to speak kindly of the village.

There is also a Norwegian Museum called “Little Norway” a couple miles away. You see Wisconsin is full of little enclaves created my various communities of immigrants who have come here over the years. Apparently there is some place within our borders that looks exactly like someplace across the sea. If you didn’t move into the big city of Milwaukee you searched for that place that looked just like home. So many Wisconsin Communities take great pride in being German, Norwegian, Swiss, Dutch, Belgian, English, Welsh and so forth. But as Silbs says, “I digress”. Something I take great pride in!

So the Cave of the Mounds was discovered in 1939 when workers were blasting limestone that was used in the local roads. The more I learn about Wisconsin history I found it surprising that they actually stop quarrying at that point and never started up again. Chalk one up for preservation! The cave is actually quite small and only takes about an hour to tour, but it is a beautiful place none-the-less. So I thought I’d share a few pictures, sans kayaks. . .
