pigs on the wing

You house proud town mouse,
Ha ha charade you are
You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street.
You’re nearly a real treat,
All tight lips and cold feet

I remember one time on another kayak blog, the writer decided to take a day off to be enraged about some current political issue. One comment, incidentally from another blog author, said something to the effect of “shut up and just write about kayaking!” I remember having an instant queasy feeling. Not from the blog itself. I mean, we’re real people. We feel, think and believe things. You have to admit the world can be an ugly and frustrating place. But the comment on the other hand did bother me. I guess I was surprised that there could be an assumption that a blog, like a magazine, was a “product”. The reader’s expectation was a kin to a paying customer who came to read about their preferred subject. Apparently they didn’t get their money’s worth if page 27 was “off topic” as it were. Interesting. For my part I’ve always hoped readers understood that this journal was written by a kayaker but was as I say “mindless ramblings”. I am not “only” a kayaker. So far, I’ve not gotten the “Shut up and play yer’ guitar” responses. In fact, I feel like if you knew exactly what to expect, it would get boring. Not that it doesn’t sometimes anyway. :) I think it’s fair to say that a blog is generally not a commercial endeavor. Not commercially driven anyway. No subscription or advertiser demands that we stay “on topic” as it were. That’s what the Magazines are for. (Lord knows, Sea Kayaker would never look twice at my gibberish as it is) In fact I often find that we have more in common than just kayaking, and that really makes me feel good. I’m glad to know we are multi-dimensional.

With that in mind, I’m thinking about the week ahead. Let’s hope we have time to talk about; Tow Ropes, The Georgia Symposium, Trips to the Yucatan, more guests at Canoecopia, and if I have the guts, the “Gordon Brown Lynch-o-Thon”. I might write about politics or religion as well. But I doubt it.

Just shut up and play yer guitar!
Sorry, had to be the first to say it. Write what you want, it’s all good.

Personally, I like hearing about retired circus folk, insights into aging, hiking, philosophy on humanity, etc. Don’t quit. I don’t stop in here every day just to read about kayaking. It’s good to know YOU.

BTW, I know who the dogs and pigs are. I remain a sheep on principle, but grow horns. ;-)

Wow, I didn’t know there were rules about blogs. For my blog, I just patently assumed it was MY site, because I paid for the hosting and did all the work to maintain it, that it was MINE. It’s interesting to hear someone elses viewpoint on that. Interesting, but somewhat pointless. Off topic, on topic, what’s the difference, it’s all topical from a certain point of view.

I don’t believe there are blog rules either. Quite the opposite: Blogs Rule! So keep posting life from all sides, Derrick. There’s no one out there who seriously believes they don’t change their image as they turn in life’s mirror. Thank goodness people are all so multi-facited!

Great point. Of course we all own our own blogs and can write anything we damn well please. But I also find it jarring when a blog on sailing or kayaking, say, suddenly shows up one day with a political rant.

I’m trying to avoid such a jarring discontuinity on my blog but I think it can be good to occasionally drift off the main topic to talk about other aspects of the writer’s life which may well add depth and color and background to the writer’s posts on the main topic.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I thought it was a good topic of discussion. Certainly if we have a blog we can all write whatever we want to write. Then, by allowing comments we also open ourselves up for criticism such as the “shut up and talk about kayaking thing”. I thought the expectation that you would never deviate from a given topic surprised me. I guess some people do have multiple blogs too. One for each aspect of their personality. Yikes Sybil blogs!

I have three blogs going, one for outdoors stuff, another for whatever strikes my mind and one for the icelandic family. It kind of gives me nice boundaries and my nerdy side gets all kinds of statistics to mull over.
But I think its plain rude to try to be an editor of a blog that belongs to someone else.
Some of your most interesting writings are not on “topic”

    cheers
