a milestone of sorts. . .
As we go from seed to seed, from glimmer to ashes
Our hands are very small, our eyes are very big
As we sit around the fire telling stories – greg brown
Which brings me to my milestone. This totally un-educational and highly un-poetic post is number 501 of the Kayak Wisconsin Blog I Launched in December of 2004, like so many others with absolutely no clue why I was doing it. 501. . . no wonder no one can find anything! In those almost 2 years of almost daily posts I’ve gone from abusing myself to the strange privilege of being abused by expedition kayakers the world over. As in, “Derrick, you wanker I already told you I’m only talking to Wenley” or “If you compare me to Peter O’Tool again I’m going to fly over there and beat you bloody with a Werner!!” Ah, life is good!
Well, it’s probobly not quite like that. Over the last couple years I’ve written posts on all sorts of skill work, news about a great many spectacular expeditions, and exercised my minds mad recesses and some how managed (I hope) to keep it all loosely tied together. Quite a task I can tell you. I’m always wondering, “Did I write about that before?”, “Is this correct?”, “Who am I to make this judgment?”, “What the hell am I going to write about tomorrow?” and a million other concerns that flow through your brain when you know you’ve got some hundreds of strangers thumbing through your blogging quagmire on any given day. Often when I look at the numbers I start feeling like I’m going to hyperventilate. I wonder, “how do I live up to this?” then I take my tablets and within an hour I’m thinking, “Hey, it’s my damn blog!!!!”. Ahhh, medication!
I am really hoping the labels work for you. Early on I wrote so much about general kayak skills and all that information is here. It’s just back a bit. I don’t want to get repetitive and write repeated posts about draws, but to be sure that information is here. Hopefully the labels will help new folks find them. I’ve also found that if I go to Google and search “kayakwisconsin” then add what ever I’m looking for on the end i.e., “kayakwisconsin tow ropes”, I can almost always find those posts. In addition I built a categories section to again, help you find those old posts. And even my crazy tirades if you’re so inclined to find them. . .
So how do we travel through the next 500 posts? Hell if I know, but with your input and the kindness of strangers we’ll keep plugging along. Maybe once in awhile we’ll find something interesting. These days I just hope I’ve found a good groove. I know when I get boring you will just stop coming. We have so many great writers out there. Some days I’d rather read their blogs too.
But I’m glad you’re here and reading along. That in itself is quite a gift. I’m honored. Thank you.
For my part I’ll carry over a bit more wood for the fire and do my best to just keep telling stories. . .

Wow. Congratulations! I wonder what post I’m on…
So between you & Hans, I’ve pretty much decided that I’m not updating until they drag me there kicking & screaming. I suppose eventually they will, but in the meantime it doesn’t sound like they bothered testing their own upgrade procedure for annoyingness before inflicting it upon their hapless users.
The price is still right, though!
Hey Bonnie,
Thanks. Actually the update on blogger’s end went fine. I just saw that I could go back and label everything and thought I should. But you don’t have to.
I was concerned since I publish to my own site and not to blogger, but it was pretty seamless. Thing is, it really does not LOOK like much of an upgrade. But if it’s more stable, that’s everything!
Congratulations on the milestone! You’ve definitely found a good groove, and I hope you’ll keep up the blog for a good long while. It’s great reading.

Good on you Derrick! 501 is an impressive number, about 5 times my own meager effort.
I upgraded to ‘beta’ a while ago and found it easy and like you nnotice few changes, although pictures now sometimes load twice… As for labels, I didn’t bother going back, but have put them on new items. I suspect most people will go that route.
As Bonnie says, there’s nothing like it at the price!
Wow, congrads, 501…and you thought OCD was all bad
you really are a trooper derrick. i think i got about 3 blogs in before work and life got it’s grubby hands on my free time. the big appeal of your blog is that you write from the “everyman” perspective regarding kayaking. I wonder if your posts will still be as wonderfully self-deprecating when you become a 5* rock star.
isn’t it nice to know that day will never come?? LOL! While you on the other hand. . .
Never? I don’t buy that. The Derrick I knew a few years back barely had a standard roll, couldn’t edge his kayak, couldn’t do any advanced strokes, and didn’t really push himself. Now that guy is a rolling machine and has a thermos full of earl gray to attest for his 3* and 4* skills. Next logical step would be 5* or some of the coaching certs. Right? Then I wouldn’t have to travel far since you could be my BCU trainer.
As for me, I’m not sure I’m a good fit with any of the major schools of kayaking and we in Team Zero believe in mutual mentorship versus rockstardom. Of course I never thought I would buy a tuilik, get into greenland style paddling, run class IV, or use a wing paddle. I’m constantly being turned into a liar so I guess I should start brewing some tea…
ahhh, coming from the guy who had one interesting “sonoma” roll a couple years ago, and is now about 3-4 rolls behind the best traditional rollers on the planet. . .
Hmmmm, and then there’s that cowboy hat. . . Oh, then there were those ah, female followers at the symposium. . . Who’s a Rockstar??!!! Just confess you’ll feel better!!
btw, you’d be surprised what ends up in that thermos. Good thing the BCU gods never taste test!!
Hello Derrick, that is an impressive body of writing you have created. I thought I had done well reaching #27!

Douglas, you’ve got a lot of nice stuff packed into those 27 posts. . well other than those poor bunnies!!
“Derrick, you wanker I already told you I’m only talking to Wenley”
My hard-earned bad reputation is worth millions…
Congrats on 501, and on being brave enough to update the blog. I’ve been too chicken to even think about it. I keep hoping it’ll stop asking me to update.
Here’s to post# 1001 Derrick.
I often wonder where we all get the inspiration to blog and how we keep coming up with more things to blog? A mystery?
When are you doing your 5* training – next year after Anglesey symposium? Its surely the next logical step?
Dude, keep on keepin’ on.
