How Calm The Water And Bright The Rainbow
-macca

Ok, so I’ve got my new friend Nigel the Dragon here beside me and I’m ready to write. . “What’s that Nigel?”, “Get on with it!??”, “Ok then. No need to be pushy! Go light some Lincoln logs on fire or something! . .” Yikes, like I need a dragon with an attitude!!So I bet you guessed it as soon as you saw the photo. Our first Canoecopia mystery guest is none other than the lovely mistress of sea kayaking, Justine Curgenven!! For those of you new to our little sea kayaking world, Justine is the producer of the award winning action films, “This is the Sea” and This is the Sea II”, two absolute “Must Haves” for sea kayakers around the world. I mean where else can you see such amazing wildlife, kayaking skill, big water, beautiful scenery and Jeff Allen‘s bare bum! (notice I didn’t mention Leon Somme‘s farmer’s blow. . ) Oh, and the music’s not too bad either!

But there’s much more! Thanks to the folks at Lendal and and the crazy people at Rutabaga, Wisconsin will host the world premiere of Justine’s upcoming DVD, “This Is The Sea III! What a great opportunity to see her exciting new film on the big screen! This Is The Sea III has some amazing stuff including; an 800km expedition down the Antarctic Peninsula where at one point the poor Aussies were caught in 50 knot winds and trapped thick brash ice! The talented women of traditional paddling Cheri Perry and Freya Hoffmeister doing what they do so well. (Finally we’ll get to see how Freya get’s up on that headstand!). The legendary and hard to pin down, Paul Caffyn author of the book “Obscured by Waves”. Long before expedition kayaking became something of an attraction, Paul had quietly paddled everywhere and circumnavigated almost everything. :) . And for you adrenaline junkies, earlier this year there was a big gathering at the “Falls of Lora” tidal race in Scotland which more than tested the skills of some of the world’s top sea kayakers. Justine was there to catch it all on film and spend a bit of time upside down as well! I wonder if she caught the bit where Freya went for a swim?? Of course there is much, much more.

After the premiere on Saturday, March 10th 2007, Lendal will be hosting a big premiere bash at the High Noon Saloon on East Washington Street in Madison. Scott Lynch at Lendal tells me we expect quite a party. He’s even arranging for a hot Celtic band to keep everyone on their feet. I have to get my copy of This is the Sea III at the show for Justine to sign as well. And no, regardless of what you may have heard she will not be signing bellies or various other body parts. Well, maybe if it’s in a cast. . . . Justine will also be speaking at Canoecopia and be part of various other presentations at the big show. There are lots of details still to be worked out so keep your eyes here, or on Justine’s blog, and of course at the Canoecopia website. They will post more details probably by mid-December or so.

I have to tell you I’ve been chomping at the bit to tell you about Justine’s visit and the premiere of This Is The Sea III. You can’t imagine the amount of time it takes for something like this to be organized. Many people such as Scott Lynch and Nando Zucchi at Lendal (Johnson Outdoors), Megan Pfeiffer & Darren Bush at Rutabaga and others have put a lot of time into bringing Justine over. They should get lots of kudos for their work. Thank you guys!! I’m happy we can finally say it’s going to happen!

“Anything else Nigel??”,

“hmmm?”,

“No, I’m not going to talk about those new glowing paddle blades today. . .”,

Why? Well, it’s Justine’s day of course. Silly dragon.”,

“Yes, I’m sure your breath could get them to glow. . “,

“Yep, they will have them at Canoecopia and you can come along ok!??”

“Yes. I’m sure Justine will like you.”

“Yes, we’ll ask her if she’ll sign your belly. . . .”
