idiom

The tactful cactus by your window
Surveys the prairie of your room
The mobile spins to its collision
Clara puts her head between her paws
They’ve opened shops down West side
Will all the cacti find a home
But the key to the city
Is in the sun that pins
the branches to the sky

So at 8:30 this morning in Tasmania Andrew McAuley slipped off into the Tasman sea on his way to New Zealand. I’m not going to try to guess when that was our time but we know Andrew is on the water. You can follow along here. Someone once told me to get to the door the first thing you have to do is take a step. To punctuate his remark he would take a step toward the door. Then he’d repeat “To get to the door the first thing you have to do is take a step.” and with flourish he would continue the process of “stepping and stating” until he could grab the knob. Sure, I got the point after the first step, but reinforcement is good. Somehow my silly human brain felt a subconscious bit of glee that in the end, he’d reach the door. It was progress. Good. I can do that. No doubt Andrew knows that to get to New Zealand, the first thing he has to to is take a stroke. . .

Thinking about Andrew in Tasmania brings me sort of round the houses and back to what I was going to write about today. The fact that our strange little kayak place here, is not always about Wisconsin. I get emails every so often, one recently in fact (thank you) pointing out that someone in say, Dundee, Scotland may just overlook the site because they’d say “Where the hell is that???” Point taken. I’ve thought about that in some degree for probably a year now. But then on the other hand my little kayaking spot on the internet is not really about marketing either. Well, not completely. LOL! Funny that. “Kayak Wisconsin” sounds exactly like some sort of tourism guide as it is. :) Certainly these days a “rose (or cow pat) by any other name. . .” would still be found on the net. If anything, my impetus to change would be nothing more than wanting to better fit, as John Cleese says, “My own particular idiom”. . .

Suffice to say whenever I felt a bit of wanderlust about the site I would talk to friends, share some emails and invariably they’d say. “It’s your damn site, do what you ever the hell you feel like”. Then I’d chicken out. Change is scary. Oh Yeah. So is launching a kayak out into the Tasman sea. In the end “Do what ever the hell you feel like” was actually the answer to both sides of the discussion.

Prepare for the winds of change. . .

and all my hopes to Andrew. We’ll be thinking about you!!

NOTE: This Evening I will be updating and changing the website.
I’ll apologize in advance for any issues you may encouter. . . Stay tuned!!

Go for it, Chevalier de la Table Ronde…they used to do what they like, too…

You aren’t changing the name are you? Content, formatting, whatever else, go for it.

As silly as it may sound, thanks to the viral nature of the internet the name/site kayakwisconsin has found a happy niche among the paddling community and it’s tough to get people used to a different name (craigslist is a perfect example).

With that said, I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

yep, and everyone will hate it too!! and won’t be able to pronounce it either. but I’ll have the old name pointing to it forever so no one should get too lost. :) actually that’s the major change with a few minor upgrades. I don’t want to fiddle it too much.

Unpronounceable name? Great. Mr wrds, fwr vwls, Englsh’s bggst hrdl.

I might follow your lead. I’ll watch the site counter and see. Lead on, Sir Derrick, the Bold!

  • Alex says:

does that mean you have to get new stickers for your kayak as well? :)

Interesting name. Quixotic was always one of my favorite SAT words although I always thought of it as a nice way to say someone or something is whimsical/irrational/crazy. :) You do seem to fight your share of windmills (or strobe lights) on your blogs so it definitely is appropriate.

I do miss your old colorful banner though as the new one seems a bit gray. Thanks for including me on your “Quixotic Friends” list. I guess now I HAVE to update my blog more than twice a year! I’ll start spreading the word that KayakQuixotica is THE place to be for all things relating to sea kayaking and many things that aren’t.

  • derrick says:

LOL!! Well, Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve heard whimsical/crazy/irrational. . but i felt like it fit. “Kayaking and then some other stuff. . “

See, I didn’t change it very much though. A lot of the change was on the back end so I could manage it better (style sheets. . etc.) Plus I widened the pages so stuff didn’t scroll so far down, added and removed links, sorted categories a bit more. . all that fun stuff. But basically it’s the same site.

Yeah, and why the hell don’t you update your blog??

I like it. The name is…sort of…mysterious. Haunting. And as you say, reflects things not only about kayaking, but about life in all its many facets. I think it will catch on, and when I clicked my kayak wisconsin favs tab, your new site still came up. I find the new homepage slightly spartan… I cannot find the blogs and stuff as readily, but alas, it is a work in progress. I think you are right, D-kam, kayak wisconsin sounds travel brochure-ish, and as you have shown us (us being the world, really), you sure have a way with a camera and a keyboard and seldom are your musings relevant only to cheeseheads. Onward, quixotic soldier. And I can see the look on Beatrice and Olive’s faces when I spring this “quixotic” on them as a triple word score at the Shady Elms Home Scrabble tourney. Thanks in advance for that.
