Splash or Sprinke

Well, for a third of a second this was really cool. It’s a Sanyo “Splash-resistant” Xacti VCP-CA6 handheld MPG4 Digital Movie Camera. And who says the BCU magazine isn’t worth the fee!?? It’s worth reading the review in Canoe Focus as well. But the thing that stuck out to me is is the bit where they say it’s not warranted against being sprinkled with water. Is’nt a spash bigger than a sprinkle? Well, that pretty much trashes it for paddlers then. Well Sanyo, how about giving it another go??

It’s been a while,
Since I’ve seen that smile
But the old magic’s still there
And I love what you’ve done with your hair…oh yeah!

Sure, Rutabaga is a big place. Yet, you’d not know it if you were spending the evening with all the people who make it fly. Sitting in a living room stuffed with smiling happy faces you get a much better feel for the shop. It’s not so much a business as a communal endeavor. Darren Bush, co-owner along with Jeff Weidman would be the first to tell you that’s so. And it seems at every occasion, he does. He’s not a guy who wants to be exalted, he’d rather just play his roll as part of the team. It would sound cliché if you didn’t know Darren. In many ways I think he just takes joy in helping to provide an fun way of life for a bunch of paddlers. I really like Darren. I’m sure you would too. ( do I get a raise now??)

Before the party we took some time to run around Madison and get some Christmas shopping done. I picked up some maps and a new CD by the Darkness which I popped right in the CD player and blasted away while driving round trying to find one house in a city of tens of thousands. We weren’t early. We were second. :)
I spent a good amount of the evening being fired upon by evil pirates while kids and kids at heart, sat on the floor and played with a Fisher Price play set. Soon it was time to play a holiday gift game that I’d never heard of before called, “Selfish Santa”. The game basically goes like this. The first person picks a present from under the tree. The second person can steal their present or take a new one. If someone steals your present you then can steal someone else’s or get a new one from under the tree. On and on this goes while everyone vies for the gifts they most desire. I stole a gingerbread house kit. It was easy since everyone else seemed to go for chocolate and a cutting board. Although the Rutabaga logo bathroom paper holder was certainly charming!
Later this week we’ll be talking about the “Crossing The Ditch” expedition coming up in January, Looking at different ways to pull off a bow rudder, and who knows what else. Well, another work week is upon us. For my part I’ll be back on the high seas hunting down those pirates. Thing about pirates. . one minute their there. . . the next minute they disappear without a trace.

This time my song of love and life won’t go away
I’ll sing forever
here in the sunshine
I’ve lived to see the sun break through the storm
And I’m so glad I’m standing here today.

So today is the annual Rutabaga Staff Christmas Party. Rutabaga is of course where I teach and are the organizers behind Canoecopia and the Door County Sea Kayak Symposium. Instructors aren’t technically “staff” but they invite us anyway because they feel sorry for us. (well me anyway). Of course the main reason the guys go of course is to fawn around Megan. . . Oh, and speaking of which. . .

The picture above is of two of the other instructors, JB and Silbs posing by our stuff. You’ll notice we all have our NDKs on top and our vanity plates on proud display.

And with that bit of blather, I need to go check on a ham. . .

oh, and did you notice there were like 3 posts yesterday? Sometimes I just won’t shut up!!

Akuilisaq & Gauntlets

Yippee! I got my 2007 Reed Catalogue today. Wow, Freya, you’re all over the place! Be sure to go to page 10 to see the a couple new products for those of us with a Greenland personality. Now you all know I’d been bugging Chris to make me an Akuilisaq, while unknown to me Freya Hoffmeister had become a Reed Sponsored kayaker and was also talking to Reed about new Greenland products as well. Well, the new Akuilisaq and Gauntlets made the new catalog on page 10. Cool. Now, I wonder what he’s going to say when I ask for a little customization on my Akuilisaq. I have a plan for a hybrid. So stay tuned. Until then check out the new Catalog and be sure to tell them how happy you are to see new traditional gear in that fantastic Aquatherm fabric. Oh, and check out the BCU member discount as well! Thanks Chris!!

I just can’t get you out of my head
Boy your lovin is all I think about
I just can’t get you out of my head
Boy it’s more than I dare to think about

Lay back. Relax. Look deeply into my eyes. You are beginning to feel sleepy. . . . that drysuit’s a bit warm isn’t it??

You think I make this stuff up don’t you? Well, today was the day I came across the “Salty Dog Sea Kayak Webzine“. I was just browsing around the site and noticed some interesting and seemingly unrelated links to information on how Hypnosis would make my life better. I’m certainly not going to say anything negative about it. Just took me off guard, which by the way is easy to do at four-thirty in the morning. “Hypnosis for Kayakers“? Well, I had to click on that link, and low and behold there was a guy caught in a circle of flames. Which is exactly why I spend my time in the water. A deeply entrenched fear of spontaneous combustion! “Dynamic Mind Training” it said. I wonder if this is the break I need to finally pass Alex up and nail that straitjacket roll? “You will come up, you WILL come up. . .”, “I will come up. . . I will. . .”.

Now, all teasing aside the website is produced by John Petrocelli & Bob Huszar of New York. According to what I could find on the web, John is a respected Hypnotherapist and runs The NYC Hypnosis Center, and Bob is a free-lance writer and a registered nurse. He is also doing post-production work for film and TV at NYC’s Tape House. Bob was also co-co owner of the Manhattan Kayak Company. There is a lot of good information there although at times I did click something that took me back to more hypnosis information. Notably the “photo gallery” link. But it’s worth a visit. really. But it might be a good idea to look away every few minutes and make sure you still have your clothes on. . .

Now I know what’s coming down
I can feel where it’s coming from
And I know it’s getting better all the time
As we share in each other’s minds
- lennon

Allow a self indulgent moment. Without Mr. Lennon I’d probobly never thought about love, peace & war in any sort of real terms as a teen. Often many teenagers have no real reference points. They do take music and media to be quite important. I know I did. I certainly don’t remember anyone laying down a moral compass I could relate to or understand. I was probobly quite lost. But thanks to my musical influences I was much more interested in concepts of world peace and environmental concerns than shooting rodents with pellet guns. Depending on your point of view I was either saved or screwed up by my influences. Take your pick. John Lennon was not a perfect man. But he was important. Even to some kids in the middle of bug tussle Wisconsin. Each year I take a little time to remember. I do miss those days when there was a groundswell of hope. I fear we’ve become much more jaded since then.

Not long after John was killed I got to go to New York. I road a train down from Mt. Kisco into the city. I emerged out the doors of Grand Central Station fixated. I walked a maze of streets engulfed in noise and shadows. When I stepped across the street and walked along Grand Central Park I knew where I was. I remembered the video. I crossed the street again and soon I was standing outside the front door of the Dakota. It was really just a building. It represented a lot to me until I stood there. Suddenly it was nothing more than a tall foreboding building. I wanted to feel something, but I felt nothing. I took a picture. Then I walked on. I finally ended up in a Japanese Restaurant. I drank myself blind.

Time goes by so quickly.
