one in a billion

People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
‘Cause we are all made of stars

There are a billion people in China. It’s not easy to be an individual in a crowd of more than a billion people. Think of it. More than a BILLION people. That means even if you’re a one-in-a-million type of guy, there are still a thousand guys exactly like you. ~A. Whitney Brown, The Big Picture

So it goes something like this. . .

“Hey you’re that guy!” At this point I feel like Harrison Ford. “Wow, complete strangers know who I am!” I turn with a slight smile. “You’re that guy with the blog aren’t you?” “Yep, that’s me.” I say. “Wow!” They exclaim. With some sense of pride I wait anticipating the next question. Maybe they’ll ask where I come up with all that stuff. Maybe they’ll say they learned such and such. Maybe They’ll complement my writing abilities. . . My ears perk up as the question comes. Just to be sure of myself I run all the answers quickly in my head. . .

“So, . . you know Justine Curgenven! What’s she like??”

Yup!. . . And with that thought. . .

Under that picture I see a huge caption of you yelling, “STELLA.”

Ok, complete strangers know how you are, but do they know who you are?

    And, what is Justine like?

Kinda like the bigger fish adage, eh? Well, I’m just proud to know somebody that knows Derrick Mayoleth. ;-)

  • derrick says:

Funny. But when are you going to remove the ugly yellow bungies from your new used Romany?

  • derrick says:

Yeah, they are nasty aren’t they!?? Soon as I get some more cord, they’re gone!

You’re a star, D-kam. Like your Moby quote–PLay is a super CD. Hey, maybe getting to Wis Dells on Mem Day weekend with some fellow paddlers. If so, would love to have you join us for a paddle on Lake Delton and the U and L Dells Wisc River. Heck, maybe we’ll even get out central IL mugs on Quixotica. But you can join us even if you leave the digicam at home. CD1

Your site is great Derrick. It’s the best source of information on local kayaking available and also offers so much more. The perspective of one motivated by passion rather than or at least in addition to commercial interest is refreshing. The promotion of Justine’s DVD is rather prominent on your site and I noticed you also designed her site… hence the way the conversation started. I’d like to have talked more but we got sidetracked watching me fumble with the Greenland stick and then you kept hiding out with your head under water. I hope to see you at Canoecopia or perhaps join you for a paddle some time.

Hey stranger, if you’re who I think, you were #2 that day! I actually don’t mind. Just found it sort of humorous. :)

Yeah, I’m sure we’ll see you around. :)

From your description of the conversation I suspected there we’re other incidents. I was paddling the yellow SOT that managed to sneak into a number of your pictures. The hand rolls we’re quite impressive BTW.
