flyin’ with the chumps

It’s nothing that I haven’t seen before
But it still kills me like it did before

But it still kills me like it did before

Someone said once that we get the government we deserve. That may be so. I’d like to add to those quick off-the-cuff observations and say, if you want to see the soul of humanity just look at the way they do business. Business of course is the "hoity-toity" term we use that really means the way we get cash. Usually by extracting it from others for goods or services. Of course these days "business" has blurred to a point where you’re not always sure what the "goods or services" actually are. Services are provided on a "if we absolutely must"basis and "goods" are things we sell temporary licenses for, not actually the goods themselves. If we do sell goods they are usually in need of upgrading before you can get the box open.
Now don’t forget that the people who came up with all this knee-deep cow pat practices are your friends and neighbors. They are the people on your county boards, social clubs, and DNR advisory councils. Oh, and let us not forget, they are the people in your government! Thus proving of course that if we’re ok with the way corporations treat us as individuals, we do indeed deserve the government we get. It all comes together in the end.
Well, what got me on this little tirade was British Airways. Chumps. Now the fact that I have to fly on a BA flight in a week means I should probably keep my mouth shut. . but who reads my drivel anyway?? So. . . Back to British Airways. So I read this article on the BBC that tells how British Airways edited out a split second cameo appearance of of Richard Branson in the new Bond flick before they would show the vid on their flights. They also airbrushed out the Virgin logo on the tail of a plane! You have got to be freaking kidding me!!!! Yes, Virgin airlines is a competitor. Well, sort of anyway. But can you imagine the minds behind the move?? You know it’s not so much the pettiness of the act. Yeah, it’s obviously petty to the point of silly. But when you think a bit more about it, it gets down right scary.
Think about this; Who first at BA thought. . . "I don’t want to show that picture of Mr. Brandson."? Then who did he talk to? Then did they have a committee of people sitting round a table drinking Starbucks and contemplating this silliness as if it were "Business"?? Then they had to call the company that edits films for them. Get permission, etc. Then some poor tech had to actually remove the offending half second and clean up the tail of the plane! This is no little chore. They had to spend a lot of time and money. Wow!! All apparently because they thought the mere spit second glimpse of Richard Branson would have passengers demanding the flight turn around so they could ride a Virgin. . . No wait that didn’t come right at all did it?? Moving on. . .
It’s like the guy with the obscene bumper sticker. I’m not offended by the bumper sticker. I’m scared at the thought of how much time the individual went through to put it on his car. Can you see that guy in some truck stop laughing his head off as he spins the little bumper sticker display and thinks, "Yeah that’s so true!!" and feeling the profound need to buy the bumper sticker that says, "No Fat Chicks". Well, this guy as never dated a woman with self-respect that’s for sure!! Even a thin woman with any sort of IQ would be humiliated to be associated with that. Then you can imagine him tossing the cash on the counter and the excitement of thinking of getting in on his truck. Then the poor sod must sit in his driveway carefully putting his cherished sticker on the bumper. Then stands back and admires it for awhile. Just stands there in his drive, reading over and over. . "No Fat Chicks". Feeling he’s just the king of comedy. You see, it’s not the sticker, it the effort and thoughts that went behind to put it there that has me worried!
Now here’s the thing. All business has competition. Fine. You want to compete? Be better. Simple. Sometimes better is not enough. Sometimes like in kayaking, personal choice is part of the decision. I’d pop a cork if I had to start airbrushing out other boat and gear logos in symposium pictures just because they were not "sponsors". Be real.
As for British Airways. . . . Chumps!!
day on the water
all about nothing. . .
Long week. I’ve been battling another fun ear infection in addition to working like crazy to get most of my business stuff out of the way before I leave. buried in business meetings. . all good really, but taking a lot of time. I did manage to order a replacement for my Canon 10d that finally died. I decided on the new Canon XTI which seems to be a very nice camera. I also ordered a Blackberry so I can stay a bit more connected as I travel this year. Of course it does not work in the UK. Figures.
what are YOU doing today?

Ride, ride, ride, hitchin’ a ride

Hadas Feldman & Tomer Sabag are getting really close to being ready to head off for Newfoundland. Their flight is booked for May 24th. She’s quite thankful that so many kind sponsors have come forward to help out with this great adventure. I’m told that Nigel Dennis has a nice new beautiful Black on Black Greenlander ready for her as well as a yellow and white Explorer. Nando Zucchi from Johnson Outdoors (who was just featured in Adventure Kayak by the way) has worked hard to get them all sorts of gear from Extra Sport and of course they will be using their most excellent Lendal Paddles along the way. One way they’ve saved time and money is to have much of their gear shipped to various places in the US, Canada, and Isreal. In fact their Lendal paddles are already in Newfoundland waiting. Suffice to say organizing a trip like this takes a lot of advance planning, time, money and help. It’s great that there are so many people who are happy to give their gear, time and effort to support them. Of course as Hadas points out sponsors are not there to pay for you to have the time of their life. They help but for their gain as well, in the end you have to put a lot of your own time and money into an expedition. She has certainly done that. Take that as a lesson if you are planning your own adventure. Sponsors get hundreds of requests. Don’t count on sponsorship. Plan to do it all yourself and if you are lucky enough to get a little help along the way, consider yourself blessed.Tomer has been practicing his kayak fishing skills and apparently the poor kid is stuck with the cooking duties as well. In addition he’s also the guy in charge of getting those bungies on the hatches, and setting up the first aid kit. . hmmm, Hadas must have the special assignment of trip entertainment and just looking fantastic. (you know I’m going to get it, for that one!!) Well, if that were all she was doing she’d certainly pull it off!! To stay up to date with the Newfoundland Expedition follow along here. By the way, she tells me they have a couple nice new t-shirts with their fun logo on them. . . maybe I can swap her for one with a pirate on it!? For my part it’s off to Wales for the symposium in a couple weeks. Of course as I said, I can’t grasp it yet. . so I’m not planning at all. LOL! * photo from Hadas & Tomer. Used by permission. Thank you!

"Vieques (English pronunciation: vee-AY-kayz or -kez), in full Isla de Vieques, lies about 10 miles to the east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures approximately 21 miles long by 3 miles wide. It has a population of about 10,000. Its two towns are the administrative centre Isabel Segunda (sometimes written Isabel II) on the northern side of the island, and Esperanza on the south.
The island’s name is a Spanish spelling of a Native American word meaning "small island". It also has the nickname "Isla Nena", usually translated from the Spanish as "Little girl island". Its natives are known as "Viequenses". During the colonial period the British name was "Crab Island".
Vieques is best known internationally as the site of a series of protests against the US Navy’s use of the island as a bombing range and weapons testing ground, which eventually led to the Navy’s departure in 2003." – Wikipedia
On March 16th of this year Jose Cedeño, Steve Mueller, Peter Hawk and Greg Breining took a few days to circumnavigate Vieques. Jose works with the Caribe Environmental Services in Caguas, PR. Peter, Steve & Greg are from Minnesota. Peter & Steve are with the Tails & Waterways program of the MN Department of Natural Resources. Greg Breining is the Author of "Wild Shore" a book about his kayak trip around Lake Superior as well as the official canoe route guide for the state of Minnesota. Pretty impressive group!
Jose who has paddled most of the Puerto Rican coast at one time or another tells me that there are really few places in Puerto Rico these days where you can experience the kind of remoteness you can find along the eastern shore of Vieques. I can’t wait to see it myself!
