Hi Rotem!!!!
Rotem Ron was the first presenter here at the symposium. The audience of course was enthralled with the story of her solo circumnavigation of Iceland last year. A good number of whom had doubted she would have completed it. I mean, remember at the time a few well known paddlers were planning an attempt. Rotem on the other hand was not well known outside of her home in Israel and had not done a large expedition before. And that is what is really fantastic about her story. The part she didn’t include in her presentation, how amazing she really is. Sure Iceland was beautiful. Sure there was wildlife. But the star of this expedition was this soft-spoken woman with amazing will. One who did not seek “a name”. In the end she carried herself well throughout her presentation even though she needed to grasp at each word of English to tell us her story. I could not help but think how wonderful it would have been if we could have understood her in her native language. In English you could only catch hints of the expressiveness she seemed to have within her. And yet, she walked through her story without notes and bringing the audience to riotous laughter on more than one occasion! Well, done Rotem.
For my part it’s been nice to get to meet her in person. People often have different opinions about the “Stars” of sea kayaking. Often quite justified. In meeting Rotem however, you soon learn that this woman deserves every bit of the attention she gets. And probably much more.

Hi Derrick! I am starting to feel kind of weird about referances to the “Stars” of sea kayaking. I mean dont get me wrong here. I love Justenes movies there great! I also realise she needs funding to make these. I think its great that all these folks get to jet around the world basically suported by there sponsers .
I think every kayaker out there would like to do it. But most have to work for a living and are lucky to get out 2 times a month. They can barely afford to buy a decent kayak or wet suit.
Heres to all those unknown weekend stars of kayaking!
But I think there really is only one star in sea kayaking. Paul Caffyn! No ones even come close to his acheivments.
“He dont sing for Coke” Neil Young
I also would like to say I dont mean to offend by this.

Hey Jim,
I really agree for with you. Of course on the other side as long as there are learners, magazines, movies, etc., there will always be “stars” just like any other sport. It’s just the way it goes. But you are right we certainly wish we all could get free stuff! LOL! But I would say too that many of the well known kaykers out there do have to “perform” for their sponsors as well. It’s not really “free”.
but yes, good points.
And, every sport/culture needs its stars to stir our imagination, to inspire greater efforts and, sometimes, just to make us day-jockies feel like we’re part of something much bigger than ourselves. More over, we need guys like you to tell us their stories. Stay safe over there.
