you often have share the same religion

Leela: Someone should teach you a lesson.
Captain Zapp Brannigan: Well, if it’s a lesson in love, watch out.
I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?

Kif Kroker: Ugh…”Sexlexia”.

I enjoy teaching. But there are times when I can related to those anti-organization guys. I just don’t feel like them every day. Yet there are times when I wonder how much ACA or BCU stuff I really want to do. Maybe more so now. Maybe I’m just getting cocky. LOL!

I’ve had my ACA Basic coaching certification for some time now. To go the next step, I’ve had to contemplate driving about 6 hours, just to take a few hours on the water to have an Instructor Trainer be sure I knew what the hell I was doing in conditions over 2 feet. Of course the point is not that you can handle those conditions, but that you can coach in them. Thing is, sometimes it’s really a bloody pain and frankly, expensive. Then of course coach training can be a bit like a theology class. In order to pass, you often have share the same religion as the professor. . . In the end you need to ask yourself if one more level makes any great impact. In some sense it’s nice to have the “label”. I’ve said before I like the challenge of the occasional test. Still though, there comes a point where the difference between true boat control and instructional ability can get lost in “tempest in a tea pot” issues and rigid lesson plans.

In PR we had the discussion a few times about moving on to BCU 5* training and Coach assessments as well. Thing is, you have to be motivated to put in the time and effort. It’s not worth it to just chuck out the cash & time for a patch. Recently when I think of certifications I’ve been feeling a bit like Calculon on Futurama, yelling “What’s my motivation??” Don’t get me wrong, I love to coach. But sometimes the certification process is like being told what’s in a hot dog. It’s just more than you wanted to know. It’s been a long season and maybe I’m just a bit burnt out.

Next season, I imagine I’ll finish up my BCU coach 2 and if I find a way not to have to drive practically to Canada, I’ll spend the time to do my ACA open water as well. I don’t have another trip on my agenda until 2009. Still, sitting right here today, I’m not all that up for more assessments. Well, unless of course a there is good Irish whiskey is served afterwards. . . .

What is in a hot dog???

You get your Open Water Instructor certificaion, and I’ll see that there will be a good Irish Whisky celebration!

We (Silbs and I) may even invite you to join us in his celebration, date to be announced.

No wories Derrick, there is a long, cold, dark midwest winter on the horizon. You’ll get the itch before spring.
