you often have share the same religion

Leela: Someone should teach you a lesson.
Captain Zapp Brannigan: Well, if it’s a lesson in love, watch out.
I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?
Kif Kroker: Ugh…”Sexlexia”.
I’ve had my ACA Basic coaching certification for some time now. To go the next step, I’ve had to contemplate driving about 6 hours, just to take a few hours on the water to have an Instructor Trainer be sure I knew what the hell I was doing in conditions over 2 feet. Of course the point is not that you can handle those conditions, but that you can coach in them. Thing is, sometimes it’s really a bloody pain and frankly, expensive. Then of course coach training can be a bit like a theology class. In order to pass, you often have share the same religion as the professor. . . In the end you need to ask yourself if one more level makes any great impact. In some sense it’s nice to have the “label”. I’ve said before I like the challenge of the occasional test. Still though, there comes a point where the difference between true boat control and instructional ability can get lost in “tempest in a tea pot” issues and rigid lesson plans.
In PR we had the discussion a few times about moving on to BCU 5* training and Coach assessments as well. Thing is, you have to be motivated to put in the time and effort. It’s not worth it to just chuck out the cash & time for a patch. Recently when I think of certifications I’ve been feeling a bit like Calculon on Futurama, yelling “What’s my motivation??” Don’t get me wrong, I love to coach. But sometimes the certification process is like being told what’s in a hot dog. It’s just more than you wanted to know. It’s been a long season and maybe I’m just a bit burnt out.
Next season, I imagine I’ll finish up my BCU coach 2 and if I find a way not to have to drive practically to Canada, I’ll spend the time to do my ACA open water as well. I don’t have another trip on my agenda until 2009. Still, sitting right here today, I’m not all that up for more assessments. Well, unless of course a there is good Irish whiskey is served afterwards. . . .
