John Darwin’s Red Canoe

It’s Been Awhile

Now here’s an interesting story; In March of 2002 a search and rescue mission was launched off the north-west coast of the UK for missing paddler, John Darwin. Five RNLI lifeboats, two coastguard rescue teams, a police fixed-wing aircraft with heat-seeking equipment and teams of police officers were all involved in the search. Some weeks later his trashed red kayak was found but there remained no sign of Mr. Darwin. Time passed. According to a BBC report in September of that same year, his wife was quoted as saying, “I have no reason to think he would have left and stage-managed this.” A quote made all the more interesting given todays news. Apparently today, some 5 years since he went missing, John Darwin walked into a London police station. The report says that Mr. Darwin seemed to be in good health but at this time the police offered no other details.
This is certainly a unique twist to a “kayaker lost at sea” story.
