Tilting At Waves

Elitist

And they were all impressed with your Halston dress
And the people that you knew at Elaine’s
And the story of your latest success
You kept ‘em so entertained

So this morning I sit here drinking Starbucks coffee  from a mug with a fancy Venetian theme.  Now that would be all fine and dandy if not for the fact that I also realized that the dark roasted Starbucks coffee in the bag bears an amazing resemblance to that dark loam you get your worms in for fishing.

And speaking of elitist, it’s no secret that 99% of instructional video material out there is aimed at Seakayakers & whitewater boaters.  However there is a new one out of Wisconsin targeting the recreational paddler with all that basic stuff you want to know when your goal is to just get out and enjoy a day on the lake.  Check this out here.  Oh, and that guy in the video is Darren Bush who owns Rutabaga here in Madison.

  1. Marius Said,

Can’t say much about videos targeted at recreational kayakers, but I do have a few words about coffee…

So, I landed after spending a couple of months in France. Got hooked on good espresso - every cafe would have GOOD espresso, varying levels of goodness, but good nevertheless.
To make long story short - being travel weary decided to prop my spirits up with a shot from Starbucks… The worst swill I’ve tasted.
I did grow on me for the lack of anything better ;)

Anyways, it is hard to believe, but there is more to French Roast than just scorching the heck out of coffee ….

LOL! Yeah this stuff tasted like bitter mud to me. But I ran out my cheap tasty coffee and being addicted. . it’s better than nothing. . well, not exactly “better” but necessary. . .

Most worms have good taste and would avoid starbuck’s grounds.

  4. Stevie Said,

If you think Starbucks is bad, what about US truckstop/diner coffee or even worse, UK coffee prior to the EU:-)

  5. derrick Said,

Ohhhh Noooooo! anything but British coffee!!!!!!

  6. Rio Said,

I don’t like the dark roast Starbucks coffee either. I usually buy mild breakfast blend of ‘Steep and Brew’. It’s stuff you grind at the grcoery store. Gooood stuff. I’m a little too picky about my coffee!

Can’t let a posting about coffee go without adding my comment–being a coffee snob for many years, I’ll do a Starbucks when it’s the only choice but usually find their brews too bitter for my likes. I much prefer a cup from Caribou, Stone Creek, Anodyne (sp?), or Alterra. We brew Alterra at home.

I have Caribou every day for “lunch” when I go to the shop very close to my office (stop-in for a visit, I’m at the one in Brookfield Wisconsin, monday - friday at noon. You’ll find me nesteled in one of the leather chairs in the back, with iTouch in my ears, laptop or book in my lap, or chatting with all the regulars. It’s like waling into Cheers–everyone knows your name after a couple of visits.

By the way, I’m a dark roast guy.
