2 hour drill

Ok, so there you are looking into the eyes of a complete stranger. You have two hours to teach them “kayaking”. What’s that? Good question. You ask. “What would you like to learn?”. Answer: “I don’t know.” Yeah, good answer. You don’t know what you don’t know. . do you!? So if you have 2 hours with someone who’s never been near a kayak before. . . what do you do with your time?

Well, they’ve already got their but in a boat, so somebody’s baited them. You just need to find out which bait they go for and set the hook. :-)
Why not ask “What got you here today?” They may tell you they saw someone kayak fishing, or paddling down a meandering stream, or they were hiking and saw islands off shore and said to themselves “I can do that”, or they saw a car commercial with a guy driving off into No-man’s Land to go WW creeking… Said another way, once you know their destination, you can point them in the right direction.

    How about:

    - 119 minutes of teaching the forward stroke (50 on land, 59 on the water), followed by

    - 1 minute of you Derrick, showing (off) some rolls to make appetite for more?

This was how my first lesson, and contact with kayaking, looked like and it worked for me perfectly!
