Caesarea

looking down on empty streets, all she can see
are the dreams all made solid, are the dreams all made real
all of the buildings, all of those cars
were once just a dream
in somebody’s head

Now I know this is coming. I certainly watched the bit about Israel in This Is The Sea 4 (or T4 as I’ve come to call it) with some interest. Still, It’s hard to imagine paddling right next to aqueducts built sometime around 22 BCE. I’m having nightmares of getting distracted and eating rocks. Certainly some are easily distracted by Bikinis, (It’s not like I don’t notice…) but history, now that is a major distraction. For a geek like me anyway.
Imagine. . .
Caesarea began as a little spot to land a boat by the Phoenicians in the middle of the 3rd century BCE. A place known as Straton’s Tower. It was once part of the Hasmonaean Kingdom, then captured by Pompey (you know Pompey, right??) It was expanded by Herod who took a dozen years to build a port city, then name it in honor of Caesar Augustus. It was from this city during the Jewish revolt against the Romans, many Jewish people were killed or shipped to Rome as slaves. Nothing lasts forever thankfully, and slowly they returned. Caesarea was the capital of Palestine for nearly 500 years. It was also here that according to the Bible, Peter baptized a centurion, and Paul was imprisoned. Caesaraea fell to the Crusaders in 1187 at Saladin. Much later Louis IX built legendary impregnable walls, which of course were not. They were raised in 1251. And that’s only some of the story of Caesarea. Can you imagine Greenland kayak rolling on the coast Caesarea? Totally Amazing!
