Battle of Britain

On June 18th, 1940 Prime Minister Winston Churchill made his famous quote, “”The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin.” The German plan was simple. Since they felt there was no good way to perform an amphibious assault on Britain, they would use their superior air power to beat the Brits into submission. Of course by September of 1940 they realized they had more than met their match. After being beaten back by the RAF which had less than half the number of planes and even fewer good pilots, Hitler postponed the invasion of Britain indefinitely. It was over these few late summer months where the RAF and the Supermarine Spitfire became something of a legend.

Shepherd Neame of Kent produced Spitfire Premium Bitter was first brewed to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 1990 and raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and has gained some notoriety over the last few years with their cheeky advertising. These days of course we’re all on the same side but that doesn’t protect us all from a bit of friendly tweaking now and again. At least these days the battles are waged on the sports fields.

Spitfire sponsors all sorts of sports teams and Airshows. It seems to me they need to pick up a few sea kayakers as well. I can just see that bright red kayak now. . . on the other hand if I were going to have a WWII themed paint job on my kayak I’d probably go for something more like this. . .

If you haven’t seen these, http://www.wychwood.co.uk/
I would recommend trying them out. The label art is worth the effort alone.
Hobgoblin Ale is my favorite.
Another reason for me to return to the UK — Spitfire Ale! So many beers to sample and so little time . . .
If you Americans want to come over and drink all our beer, can I suggest – in accordance with prior conflicts – that you first hold off for a couple of years before commiting?

that ad is a big MEH for me, trying to be cheeky and clever but really it is just clumsy and borderline inappropriate.
why go to the UK for beer when there are so many fantastic micro-brews right here in Canada and the US?
think globally, drink locally!
I just gotta’ know: How did you get onto this topic?
Oh you know. . the quixotic bit. browsing around come across something different. . .
Mark, that’s hilarious. I had to think about it a moment. . LOL! The problem is that we’re going to have to hand out history books and leave time to study before we make 60 year old references. . .
