twitterpated?

Alright, so this is totally “OT” but it makes me giggle.  Did you know if you type “YT?” you’re cool, but if you type “OMG!” you’re trying too hard?  ROTFLAMO! – Read on. .

Kayak Symbology

You’re sick of feeling numb
You’re not the only one
I’ll take you by the hand
And I’ll show you a world that you can understand
- three days grace

Symbology is a term which refers to the study of symbols and how they affect us culturally. It’s certainly been proven without a doubt that we humans can be amazingly enslaved by symbols. Images tend to stroke our need for a quick understanding of our environment. Flags, teams, icons, colors, almost anything can inspire loyalty or hatred simply by how we interpret them. Once defined  most of us will never look back.  “A picture is worth a thousand words. . “, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. . .”, you know the jargon. Continue reading

the itch

I remember long ago -
when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago

A phrase I’ve heard a couple times recently has been sticking in my mind. It goes something like this. “Circumnavigations are not important, they just provide a logical place to stop”. There is certainly no reason to not to go around something and there’s no reason not to make a note in the records of your life if you were “first”. But I’m beginning to realize that I could be content if I never go around something again. I will, certainly. . (see “provides a logical place to stop”). But I don’t want to miss the point of kayaking either. The kayak for me is there to take me places I may otherwise not be able to reach. When I get there, I should damn well enjoy it! Then Jesus Said, . .

If you know how to roll, you don’t have to swim.
If you know how to brace, you don’t have to roll.
If you know how to edge, you don’t have to brace.
If you can walk on water, you don’t have to edge.

I lifted this off a Pnet Post debating rolling (again) . . .

that little victory

You’d laugh if it were not real. . . Apparently Eugen Benchea is becoming a bit of an adventure rescue expert. He’s now been rescued 4 times in the last year.  According to the Wimmera Mail Times the first  was after a failed attempt to make a crossing to Tasmania, then apparently he was rescued when trying to recover the kayak. So then Mr. Benchea decided to stay on land and try climbing instead. Today was his second climbing rescue. Here’s the money quote from the local Search & Rescue guy: “After rescuing Mr Benchea four times it was clear the incidents were more than just bad luck“. Continue reading

Off the Water In Israel

This is a big file so it won’t work for everyone, but if you have high-speed access or let it load for awhile here is a look at our off the water excursions around Israel.

Alone Time

Brezhnev took Afghanistan
and Begin took Beirut
Galtieri took the Union Jack
and Maggie, over lunch one day
took a cruiser, with all hands
apparently to make him give it back

I’ve got my spots. Those marks on the map of places I want to paddle. About a year ago the Falkland Islands were still on that list. I started feeling out what it would take and before long I realized that it was a bit more daunting than I was ready for. . . yet. So I’m pretty interested in following along with Marcus Demuth who plans to begin his circumnavigation of the Falkland’s and all of its 776 outer islands beginning in January. Continue reading
