headwinds

Happy and I’m smiling,
walk a mile to drink your water.
You know I’d love to love you,
and above you there’s no other.
We’ll go walking out
while others shout of war’s disaster.
Oh, we won’t give in,
let’s go living in the past.

Freya Hoffmeister who is currently paddling a sea kayak around Australia asked in her last message, “Can you turn the headwind off”. I thought, “Yeah, for me too.” Sea kayaking is full of little metaphors for life in the big bad world. The big bad world could be described as nothing more than ball of rock & water surrounded by headwinds if you think about it. But then where’s the value in that?
Pomegranates & Rain

You put your hands in
And rip their hearts out
Like a pomegranate
Insides out

Jewish tradition teaches that the pomegranate is a symbol of righteousness. This is because the pomegranate is said to have 613 seeds which corresponds with the 613 commandments of the Torah. That may be true about pomegranates grown in Isreal, but the ones here in the states are a tad diminutive, that is to say, “small”.
morning thoughts spring

I know what you’re thinking, what you woke up pondering. You were pondering spring. You were thinking about Spain in the springtime. You were thinking about Spain, Salvador Dali, and Springtime . . .
my son’s a geek but. . .

Sorry for 2 computer related posts in one day but this one has an interesting kayak twist. The first bit of the story is how my son Julian is a computer geek. You see, he builds, repairs, refurbishes and re-sells computers. Well recently he got his hands on a good number of Panisonic Tough Books. These beasts were designed to go where angels fear to tread. Check this out on Youtube.
go deep inside

So today I’m writing on a new computer. Well, not exactly. I am on a new computer, but it’s inside my old computer. Make Sense? Well to make it more clear, that is to say precise, my new computer inside my old computer is not a computer at all in a sense. While in a sense it is. But the big point is that if it all blows up, becomes infected or maladjusted, I just delete it. Then my old computer which is a real computer will still be happy as a lark while my new computer which isn’t but is, will just be replaced. Replaced by a new computer, which isn’t.
Welcome Back

Marcus Dermuth, aka “ROCKETBOY” returned to Stanley yesterday completing his circumnavigation of the Falkland Islands. I can’t wait to hear the stories. What little we did hear along the way leads us to believe Marcus put on his super man jammies under his dry suit for this little jaunt! Congrats Rocket Boy!! Read on!
January Wake

So. . . This is as close as you can come to a boat wake in January, in Wisconsin. Hmmmm. No wait, I tell a lie. There is that cool blue pool wake. . . and then there’s the coal fired power plant cooling pond wake. Not to mention the traditional Irish pre-Saint Patrick’s day, Canoecopia Wisconsin Winter Paddlers Wake. Oh wait, I just made that one up! Still, it sure would make for a great Thursday night party over at the Sheraton Hotel!
