Everybody I know has to face the trains
Everybody I know makes the same mistakes
– the vapors
One of many life experiences most of us share is that of walking the railroad tracks. Often walking the rails is simply a quicker way to get from point A to point B on the hoof. Sometimes the tracks are just thankfully new scenery on the way to getting to the same old place. Sometimes the tracks are simply a place to walk off the demons of the day. On a few occasions while walking the tracks I’ve had to climb a poison oak laden slope or crawl through bramble to get out of the way of an oncoming locomotive. From a position of safety I could just watch the train go by. In real life we are hyper-focused on the subject of the day, the walk. Meanwhile all sorts of little things flash by us in the windows of the passing trains. They flicker by us so fast our conscious mind has little time to itemize what we are seeing through the passing glass. Then hours or days later we suddenly realize something obvious that we should have seen right off. . . “Was that goat in the window wearing a pink tie”!!?
The Underwater Times reports that researchers predict many consequences of the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Of course if you follow such things, you’d hardly read the article as you’ve heard it all a million times before. However here is a consequence I’d never heard before. . .
“the melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet will actually cause the Earth’s rotation axis to shift rather dramatically – approximately 500 metres from its present position if the entire ice sheet melts. This shift will move water from the southern Atlantic and Pacific oceans northward toward North America and into the southern Indian Ocean.” – UWT.com

Adventure Kayak Magazine wants a photograph to accompany a “humorous essay about a woman learning to pee from a kayak.” Anyone have a picture to share that won’t ruin their current relationships? Be sure to send that life altering photo to . . . .

So I ordered a big cartridge of 3M 5200 Adhesive & Sealant from Jamestown Distributors. Right after I put in the order, I realized I had selected tan instead of black. I jumped on the phone right off and called. A woman answered the phone and I explained my dilemma. “When did you order it?” she asked. “Just now.” I said. “Derrick?” She asked. “Yup.” I responded. She said next, “Ok. I’ve got it all fixed.” 20 minutes later I got the confirmation that my order had been shipped; 1 cartridge 3M 5200 Adhesive. Black. I love real customer service. I really do. Funny thing, first time I ordered from Jamestown Distributors I got a call 3 days later simply to check in and be sure all went well. They had me with that call.

Time Magazine has a solution for saving dying newspapers. . . subscriptions. Frankly they make an obvious argument. Reporting takes money. Without funding news organizations will all fall, and with them goes the what little semblance of a watchdog we have left. Once the press become solely supported by advertisers as is the way online, they become beholden to their advertisers. We lose our last dog outside the hen house as it were. Frankly we’ve been losing the war for public awareness for years. Ever since the days of Hurst (ROSEBUD!!!!), the press has not always been on the public’s side. At least when we helped to finance them we had some pull. These days, the pull is gone. It’s become so bad that the same conglomerates that should be IN the news are the ones producing the news. I come at this from 2 views. First that information must be free. PBS & the BBC and the like must always exist supported by public funding, available to all. However, there must also be a citizen press, beholden to no one but their readers. They need to be funded. If we don’t start paying them for their work they will be gone. There will be nothing left to read. . . other than the daily Beyonce & Britney reports . . .

So there are some images flashing by in the windows of a passing train. . . I’m going to do some kayak repairs later today and maybe take my newly repaired beast to the pool on Sunday. I’ll let you know how it all goes.
