If I’m down in a Honky-Tonk
Some ol’ slicks tryin to give me corrections
I’ll say leave me alone
I’m singin all night long
it’s a family tradition

So there he was 10 miles off shore in a kayak calling for a coast guard rescue. Riding back in the helicopter he was thinking of all the crap he would take when he got back to shore. The press, the accusations of irresponsibility, the suggestions of what a bad parent he was, the calls to send him the bill. . . but then he remembered how to avoid it all. . When the first reporter asked him what he was doing out there he simply said, “I was just fishing.”

If 300 guys are doing it, it must not be stupid. Right? Of course not. Building a wooden bridge onto an ice floe because the warm weather is already separating it from land is not anything we should consider “odd”. In fact it’s all just part of what Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Ratton calls the “ice fishing culture“. The fact that the rescue effort cost in the range of $20,000 and put many rescuers in danger isn’t really a problem. Anglers won’t have to cover it. Oh, and by the way another snowmobiler crashed through the ice in Wisconsin yesterday. Not a problem, It’s just our way.
