The Risks of Skylarking

Compose with trumpeting shell / From lines across their hands
A song as new as new moon / As old as all the sands
Shrank to stagnant from Atlantic wild
Lost that child
’til mermaid smiled

I remember when I first watched the movie Red October many years back and wondering what would happen if submarines really were able to block sonar. Suddenly you’d have submarines bouncing off one another at the bottom of the deep blue sea. Well, it is a big big blue sea but still. . .

So it makes for an interesting story when we read that 2 nuclear powered and nuclear armed submarines, the British HMS Vanguard and the French Le Triomphant crashed into each other early this month. Both subs were equipped with sonar. However according to a source for the SUN who first reported the collision, modern anti-sonar technology is so good it is possible neither boat “saw” each other. Sounds like fun. Sort of like playing tag under a new moon. . bring the band-aids.
