the price of fame

Want a horse, i want a sheep,
I wanna get me a good night’s sleep,
Livin’ in a home in the heart of the country.

Freya Hoffmeister has found that she needs to put a delay on some public information about her trip just to help her retain a bit of privacy during her expedition. It’s not hard to imagine why “all live, all the time” could create problems. Well, for Freya anyway. I, like most paddlers I dare say, could post 24 hour exact GPS coordinates and still not be interupped by the passing of a tumble weed . . Fame of course is a fleeting thing and you should enjoy it when you’re in the eye of the bubble. . . on the other hand sometimes you just need some sleep. ( I think Madeline Kahn sang something about that once. . .)

the risk of having the me channel on all the time, is when you decide that there is a limit to how much me you want your audience to see. It’s good to recognize that there are some limits on what you should share.
I believe that’s called “making your own bed”
I am curious how her numerous sponsors feel regarding her privacy.
Yeah, there are certainly two sides. It seems to me there is also an issue of personal safety involved as well. The problem with 24/7 tracking is not only that nice people know where you are, but so do all the not so nice people.
Great thing Freya gives us something to talk about while she is paddling to a different position.
Well,
i did give a email to Freya a few weeks ago about my experience with the SPOT. (I used it last year during my 5 month kayaktrip, through several countries.)
I also told her, maybe a good idea for your own safety to publish your where-abouts with 24 hour delay. To protect yourself from unwanted visitors. meaning people who have bad things in mind.
i think nothing wrong with this precaution. And the audience did respect me for that. As we stated on the website we publish the SPOT with 24 four hour delay.
It’s just like preparing yourself for a trip at sea… it helps to think ahead and do this kind of planning so you feel comfortable about your safety. One thing less to worry about. Safety is not only at sea, but for the whole trip.
happy paddles Freya!
Personal Safety? Let’s just say I’d be afraid for the person with less than honorable intentions, not her
I’d hate to have to arm wrestle her in a crowded bar!
Dave
Yeah that’s the point Dave. By not posting her exact whereabouts they are saving some poor loony from certain annihilation.
