Maligiaq Qajaq Building Classes

qajaqsingrass

Tom Sharp had told me some time ago that he and Corey Freedman would be hosting Maliqiaq Padilla this spring and setting up a qajaq (or “kayak” if you prefer)  building class.  If you’ve been following along on Twitter you know I promised you the details today.  So without further distraction…

The class will be 1 week long from April 18th-25th and cost $1700. Students will take home a new Qajaq that Maligiaq helped them to design and build.  It’s worth noting that one of the Qajaqs Maligiaq has built is now part of the Smithsonian Collection for Arctic Peoples.  Pretty cool eh? The class will be head near Silvana, Washington. To sign up just contact Tom at info@dubside.net or Corey Freedman at skinboat@mac.com.  You’ll have to copy and paste the links as I don’t want to contribute to their spam!!   Luckily for everyone involved I won’t be taking this class…  My bet is Maliqiaq would give up teaching boat building after dealing with me!!

Oh wait, did I mention this class would be part of a new documentary from Tom about Greenland Kayak Design!?  You be the star!!

    Hi Derrick,

    do you meant to say:

… It’s worth noting that one of the Qajaqs Maligiaq has built is NOW (you wrote “not”) part of the Smithsonian Collection for Arctic Peoples. Pretty cool eh? …

    I love your blog,

LOL! NO, I meant to point out that we have something in common with Maligiaq in that kayaks we build are also NOT part of the Smithsonian Collection!!

Thanks for catching that! Can’t come here looking for great spelling…
