Healthier, fitter, less productive

March 23rd – Hitting the trail in high winds and heavy rain.

Paddling fitness does not mean winning an Iron Man contest.  It’s no secret that one of the reasons for sea kayaking’s popularity is that people can do it well into their graying years.  Still, if you are planning a trip of any duration you must act prudently.  Give yourself enough time to build up to it, train your body, build endurance, have a physical and all the rest. You don’t have to be a Greek god but you do need to be well, fit.  Here are some snaps from the last few days…

    D,

I am putting together a presentation on paddling specific fitness for presentation at a symposium, i’ll gladly forward it to you to post on the site once it is done.

There will be loads of specific ideas on training for longer expeditions and basic paddling fitness so that the body doesn’t break down from niggly little injuries and strains, as well as good material for coaches to help understand why some paddlers reach technical and fitness plateaus and what we can do to evaluate that and give them some basic recommendations.

    cheers

Every little bit helps when it comes to fitness. I’ve been working in the public health sector for a couple of years now and one thing that really got to me is how varied quality of life can be.

I’ve met 94 year olds who look 60 and 60 year olds who look 90. Its all about being even slightly active.

all said 94 year old did was ride his bike to and from work every day, something like 3 km he said. And he continued doing it well after he retired.

There are some confounding factors here, but being active is very important, even if it is just for a little bit

Hey, Andrew, you are correct. I am a doctor who is 67, looks like 55 and feels like 90.

my mag said on the issue of weight loss [eating], nothing is better than anything and on the fitness side anything is better than nothing.

Ah, mud hikes. Those are the best, especially when you fall on your butt and slide down a hill! ;)

That actually wasn’t sarcastic. I love mud!
