and then there were 3

“Three kayakers continued on, without realizing the fourth wasn’t behind them, Shouse said.”
- The State Journal, Frankfort KY
This is the sort of report that speaks very deeply to me having witnessed situations like this so many times in the past. Luckily in my experiences the results have never turned tragic. The story goes that 4 paddlers were enjoying a day on a river in Kentucky. All was fine and after a lunch break they headed off again. Some time later a woman driving over a bridge noticed a lone kayaker in the water struggling to get back into his kayak. Now the headline says, “Dive Teams Look For Kayaker’s Body“. Continue reading
Lock Ness Elephant

You know, I miss the days when we would have marveled at the idea of a big hairy ape man running through the woods of Washington State or an awesome Plesiosaurs roaming the dark cold barren waters of Loch Ness. These days we’re too smart and certainly too grumpy to have anything to do with such poppycock. Of course the down side is people spend way too much time these days yelling at kids to stay off their lawns. Oh well. . . Continue reading
Made in USA

She’s everything you dream about…
but don’t fall in love…
She’s a beauty
- the tubes
There’s nothing special about this Rockpool Kayak. Well, no that’s not right. It’s special to Andrew Green who just recently got his new baby, and certainly is special in that it’s simply another beautiful Alaw Bach. Oh, and what makes it really special is it’s one of the first (I’m told) Rockpool Kayaks made here in the states by Rockpool North America. Continue reading
Big Water Small Boat
Lastly for today I want to share with you a new website from Brian Day. Bryan is a P&H team paddler and is published quite often in Sea Kayaker Magazine. He began his paddling adventures way back when the “Gales of November” was something of a Nordic myth. Brian paddled the Aleutian Islands with Stan Chladek, traveled to Mecca. . ah, I mean Wales, and most importantly as he stands at the right hand of the singular being we call Kelly Blades. (You thought I was going to say Sean Morely didn’t you!!)

But Mr. Horrible says, “I don’t mind
The thing that bothers me is
Someone keeps moving my chair”
- they might be giants
It’s great when I have a bunch of stuff to write about. It certainly feels better than those days when I sit down here at the keyboard and realize that the only thing standing out in my mind is the ticking of the wall clock. On the other hand, if you’ve got lots of bits to write about you tend to either overlook the important stuff while getting lost in the manushia or find yourself distracted by the cool stuff at the expense of the boring but useful. . oh, and speaking of boring . . .
The Meaning of Dreams

Live hand in hand, and together
We’ll stand on the threshold of a dream.
- moody blues
Oh, and speaking of “out there”. You know some people wanting to be dismissive of an idea will say to you, “Did that idea come to you in a dream?”. Funny. Of course many of mine do. They wake me up. It’s sort of a running joke around here that you’ll often find me up taking notes in the wee hours of the morning scribbling down some future plan or solution to a problem, or simply an outline for a blog post lest I lose it in the twilight between sleep and the new day. “Apparently when you have that, you’re not thinking straight,” she said.
– ST. Petersburg Times
The Coast Guard has suspended its search for the 3 missing boaters that were lost some 30 miles off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. The report is getting extra attention in that two of the missing men are NFL football players. The latest news is reporting that the lone survivor is telling “strange” tales of those last fateful hours as the men clung to the boat. But for people familiar with the sea, this story is probably not being found strange at all. Simply tragic. Continue reading →
