Nowhere

i can hear the same voice calling
crying out, from my heart
and that cry, what a cry
what a cry, it’s going to be
if i can stop to let it out, oh

These days I’m off biking, hiking or running for about 2 hours every day. These little windows of time allow me to come down a bit from the somewhat bent world that I live in. Trees are no problem after all, they just stand there and don’t say a thing. The picture above I took last Tuesday when I walked the railroad tracks through a local park. Lots of people do walk the tracks at the park, to (you guessed it) get to the other side. Then once around, the crowd turns west to the beach and picnic area. No one ever goes on. Why would you? The tracks simply lead off into the hills. Nowhere. That’s where I took this picture. Absofrigginglutly.. nowhere.

Funny thing about nowhere these days. When you are nowhere the birds sing much louder. There are more of them. Of course they don’t sing loud enough to drown out the jets. In nowhere there is still a fading McDonald’s cup lying in a ditch. Nowhere is filled with downed trees, underground cables, and garlic mustard. Nowhere is littered with all the stuff somebody carried in. Even the day’s stress seems carried in on the heels of old boots. Certainly stress and worry may be numbed as if treated with Ambasol. Still the sensation remains strongly enough to remind you it’s coming right back when the “nowhere” wear’s off.  And so it does. Something to think about this Saturday morning.

I’m off to teach a paddling class today. It’s going to be a cold, windy day. Hard day to create an atmosphere for learning.. but we’ll do our best. You know, I love to teach. More than anything I can think. Today though, I feel this urge to be simply walking the tracks, somewhere deep in the woods under the dappled light of a warm blue sky.
