Out of Range

We were in Glidden, Wisconsin, the self-labeled Black Bear Capitol of the world. There is not much in Glidden other than a restaurant called the Bruin which they promise, “You’ll love at first bite.” and two gas stations. One was called the “Bear Crossing”. We chose the other one. The one with the retail outlet for our cell phone company. I was going to send out a message while I was there, but we couldn’t get a signal… just one of the many fascinating moments on the way to the Inland Sea Symposium… Continue reading
Strap On

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
Youre so self satisfied I dont need you
Ive got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free
– queen
Now if you are thinking this is a post about anything but strapping your kayaks onto your vehicle, please see a therapist at your earliest convenience… So here’s the thing, there was this guy who only a few days back sent his brand new kayak flying, then rolling, then breaking up down the highway on a suddenly detached roof rack. It was a devastating case of rack rage that did not end well…

Today we’ll continue my on-going P&H Kayak Roundup with the Scorpio. Based on elements within the Zodiac, Scorpio is considered compatible with Pisces and Cancer. Being born on June 29th, we should get along just fine. Should you buy a kayak based on cosmological compatibility? Only your local astrologer knows the truth. What you need to know right off is that we simply bought the Scorpio after a 2 minute test paddle. Don’t try this at home kids!!
Electrolighthouse

I’m sitting in a big comfy checkered couch at Schroeder’s Red Bank Coffeehouse in downtown Two Rivers, Wisconsin. We managed to leave home yesterday at noon exactly as planned. What was not planned was our drive down to Rutabaga to impulsively buy a new P&H Scorpio. The Scorpio is the plastic version of the Cetus and a perfect addition to our small fleet!
D Am Em G

Theres always something happening
And its usually quite loud
– madness
Alright. It’s 5am and we’re about 7 hours away from launch. The plan is to be pulling out of the driveway at noon today for the 3 hour trip up to Point Beach State Park near Two Rivers, Wisconsin. All that big stuff that you always remember to pack, is packed. Today we have to remember all the things you always forget. You know.. the stuff you find out later you really, really needed and should have never forgotten in the first place. Oh and by the way, our title today is the chord progression from the song “Our House” by the 80′s band, “Madness” which just happens to be appropriate this morning…
NDK Appaloosa

Here’s a one of a kind kayak. It’s an NDK Appaloosa. Well, no. It’s a Romany. A very old Romany that still says, “Designed by Nigel Dennis & Aled Williams. (Aled as you may know moved on to form Rockpool with Mike Webb and then moved on to form Tide Race Kayaks… Confused?) This poor Romany has been around the block a few times.. and under a tree at least once. You see, a tree fell on it. Crushed it. The story goes that one of the guys down at Rutabaga saw it sitting in a yard all busted up and offered to take it away. He put it back together. Much like the The Talosians from the Star Trek orignal series pilot he did the best he could but… Continue reading

Dawn Paddling on Lake Michigan
Well, we’re back for 2 days before we’re on our way back north to the Inland Sea Symposium on the coast of Lake Superior. We pealed a layer of sand of the gear and the Jeep last evening. Not that it will matter much since I have a couple folks meeting me this morning for private lessons on Devil’s Lake. Kayak Week at Point Beach along Lake Michigan was great. A bit quiet and happily un-official. Enjoy it while it lasts.
