Too many games that I can’t play
Too many windmills in my way
– jennings/kerr

If you do this whole blogger, social media thing long enough you begin to feel like your simply talking to friends and acquaintances.  You begin to see the same names and faces all the time in comments or on Twitter or whatever and you grow accustom to your circle. But that’s an illusion. The fact is you’ll never know who stops by.  So when I got a nice email from the vice president of Barbara Orbison Productions I was really surprised.

You may remember I had mentioned listening to Roy Orbison’s song, “In Dreams” when I was taking a group out to explore the caves in Door County awhile back.  Well, you can imagine my surprise when the VP sent me an email simply to thank me for the mention.   The following week she sent out a new CD box set and a T.  Even in black!  Well, that was more than she needed to do, but I really do appreciate it.  Really.  I know we’re all jaded and I’m aware that this sort of  “blogger outreach”  is the way of the world these days, just business.  Still she didn’t have to respond.  Especially given that  I don’t have a nickels worth of pull in her market. (at least I didn’t think so!!)

The thing that jumped out at me really was how “Out-of-the-loop” this was.  I mean I wouldn’t be surprised to get feedback inside the industry of course.  (Lord knows, I take my beatings now and again!) But these days folks can search and track you in minutes. It took Gander Mountain about an hour to “follow” me on twitter when I happened to mention them in passing. Yikes!  To be fair, if I were selling a product I’d want to watch what folks were saying too and certainly I’d be reaching out and building good relationships with persistent voices.  How that effects the “voices” is certainly a post by itself, but something I’m certain most bloggers are well aware of.

And in a totally un-influenced and un-related topic… if you are into Roy Orbison visit the website at www.RoyOrbison.com.. (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)  Thanks Tanja!

Oh, and also if you’re not into these posts about how the sausage is made, I’m sorry.. Really.  I’m still happy you are here instead of browsing Craigslist for free stuff and I’ll certainly try harder to make it worth your while!
