Either You Do, Or You Don’t…

You either run or you hide
Now you slip now you slide
You say you will, but you won’t
You either do or you don’t
– buckingham

Things come up and things change.  That’s the nature of life.  Unfortunately things did come up and Kelly let me know today he won’t be able to make the Scotland trip.  That’s too bad too, I’m sure we’d have had a flippin’ good time.  Ok then, we rearrange the pieces on the chess board and have another look.   Can I do this solo?  Why not?  Maybe another crazy paddler would jump in and join me, if only on the slightly open water bits. We’ll see.

I was watching the Oban Bay webcam this morning.  Oban is called the “Gateway to the Western Isles in Scotland”.  According to the text, Oban is supposed to be “placed high on my holiday itinerary”.  I wonder if they mean you’re welcome in restaurants while wearing a drysuit?  I’d like to check that out personally.

Whenever those road bumps get in our way we have choices, adapt, move forward, or regroup and hit it another time… I find I have the voice of that grumpy old relative in my head.  You know the type;  “No retreat, No surrender..”, “sh*t or get off the pot.”, or the phrase I can relate to much better, “Either you do, or you don’t.”  So OK then.. let’s adapt.  Either I will, or I won’t.

An interesting thing for you could be to partner with a Scottish paddler… as opposed to a North American one. Could be interesting for your partner too – the perspectives are bound to be quite different, and the campfire exchanges could turn up to be quite interesting!

And if you’re lucky maybe they will cook you some haggish, to be washed down with a good Macallan…

  • derrick says:

ok, yeah, sure but can we skip the haggis? Blahhh! :)

  • Dominique says:

You undoubtedly have the better spelling… (haggish = hagfish, not too enticing). That said, having lived there I promise a well prepared haggis can be very good, if quite filling!

Ah – too bad the dynamic duo won’t be making it to Scotland – I was really looking forward to hearing the stories…maybe a “next time”?

  • derrick says:

Dominique – if I have better spelling.. it would be a first!! LOL!

Susan – I’m betting the story continues even if the players change…

Derrick, if you lived in Scotland I would join you on your trip.
If nothing else to give you heaps and then taunt you just for giggles, but all in good nature.
I am sure that there are some Scotsman (and Scotswomen) that will be willing to join you, even if for part of your trip.
So, guys and girls across the pond; take pity on this Yank and show some hospitality?!?
I know that there must be a lot of overseas readers of your blog…
We all want to hear how it goes, especially the bits where you find yourself like a fish out of water because of cultural differences :-)
