looking for the summer

And still I stand this very day
With a burning wish to fly away
Im still looking, looking for the summer
- chris rea

Good day yesterday at Devil’s Lake with Coach JB.  No matter how hard the sun pressed down the air temperature never reached 70f.   While being in the water felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket, crawling back out into the cool air was a cruel reminder, summer is truly gone.  We spent a bunch of time on, in and under kayaks.. shared a couple of “Headless Man” beers from the legendary and historic community of Lake Mills, indulged in classic Wisconsin Bratwurst.. oh, and I got stung by a blasted bee.   Next week the indoor pool opens…

Possiblilities

valveonferry

A thing you can turn that says “Open” with an arrow, placed at eye level for a child certainly opens up a world of possibilities.  Temptations are everywhere, even on a car ferry pushing through rolling waves under a heavy autumn sky.  The kid in me noticed the word “Open”.. the grown up saw, “Italy”.  Yup.. temptation is everywhere. ;)

It Won’t Be Long

It won’t be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won’t be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won’t be long yeah
– the beatles

I woke up this morning to a distinct chill in the air and the Beatles singing in my head.  Winter’s on the way and it won’t be long now.  Today I’m going to meet JB for a bit of play time on, and in the water.  Better do it now, while we still have time.

Enough BS to go around…

And now a road connects the cul-de-sac
To the adjacent development
But there used to be trees stretching back
And there was no way through

Ok, so if you don’t know, BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is an estrogen-like chemical linked to breast cancer & early puberty. There are also concerns about effects on babies, the effect of feminizing hormones on men.. and on and on.  Last year there was a bit of a freak out over Nalgene bottles containing BPA which could leach into the stuff you put in their bottles.  This opened doors for companies such as SIGG who sold Metal bottles.  As it stands today both Nalgene & SIGG advertise they are BPA free.. Well, they are now anyway…

Reed Chill Cheater

reedskirt08

So our friend Gnarlydog, who by the way has a great post about the new Tahe Marine Greenland Kayak, asked why I didn’t mention Reed kayak skirts in the “Respect” post..  The answer is that I was basically ranting about what NOT to do…  However, between you,  me and the wall I do prefer Reed Chill Cheater skirts over anything I’ve tried.  They are well made, snug and yet easy to remove, they actually do keep the water out and best of all, they are not nearly as hot as a standard neoprene skirt.

Visualize Man!

rockpool-pointbeach09

I’ve got a phone conference with a client coming up in about an hour and all sorts of other businessy bits to deal with today… so all you get for stopping by today (at least for now) is this photograph of my Rockpool Alaw Bach waiting to take me on an early morning paddle up the Lake Michigan coastline toward the Point Beach lighthouse.

Sometimes a photograph is almost like being there. Sometimes a photograph just clarifies where you really are.  Oh well, you know what they say, “Visualize the future you desire, then  make it happen”.  Nothing like a Thursday morning platitude to get the day started.  On the other hand I can’t help but remember what Emerson said, “When there is no vision, people perish.”  Emerson, all the inspiration, none of the BS! And with that… Have a flippin’ fantastic day…
