I’m spending a couple days trying to shake off another fantastic ear infection.  I’ve been a couple days without sleep as you can imagine. You know you live in a small town when the local pharmacy happens to be out of the medication you need and you simply have to wait until the next day… Hopefully today I can actually get the meds!! Yippie!

2007 Colman Fun 94

colman1

She says, Im getting that lonely sinking feeling,
You know what I mean?
With his hand on her back hes thinking,
where does that leave me?
– cowboy junkies

The 2007 Colman Fun 94 kayak is 9’4” feet long, has a capacity of 250lbs.  If it flips, the poor bastard paddling it may be in real trouble. It would be hard to design a recreational kayak that could hold more water while at the same time be almost impossible to drain as the “fun 94”.  In fact, in my opinion the Fun 94 represents just about everything bad in recreational kayaks.  The only thing you could do to make them worse is rent them out to holiday makers who are taking enough risk simply by being in on the water at all.

bowrudder-grip09

The bow rudder is that mystical move that takes what we were doing before with the stern rudder/draw and brings it up to the front of the kayak.  Why would want to do that?  Well, it makes you look pretty cool and that’s important of course. Maybe more useful is that you may find a bow rudder is also the best way to make a fast, sharp turn in your kayak while on the move.  In addition a bow rudder is often the solution to turning kayak into the wind on those days a stern rudder results in your kayak simply going straight.  There’s more too.. but that’s for another day… Oh, and have a look at that grip in the picture above because it will not appear in the rest of the pictures..

Gore Point Rescue

israelikayakers09

July 30th Rescue – Here’s the official Release: KODIAK, Alaska – Crewmen from the fishing vessel Vigilant throw a lifering to two kayakers who were assisted to the vessel by a Coast Guard rescue swimmer from Air Station Kodiak July 30, 2009. A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak Mh-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew located the two men after a search near Gore Point about 40 miles southeast of Homer. The men were on a trip from Seward to Homer and had been kayaking for eight days. Weather worsened and they became tired and lost some gear prompting them to use their emergency locator beacon and contact the Coast Guard. The men remained aboard the fishing vessel Vigilant and will be taken to Homer in the next 48 hours. (U.S. Coast Guard photo/Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis ) – Great Video Here. Notes from Karel the weather guy here.
