Up the Hatch!

This lovely bit of artwork is what you get when you take a picture of the flooded fifth hatch in your Scorpio. It’s not as if I left the cover off or anything.  It simply fills (and I mean fills) with water if I roll the kayak.  I don’t believe it’s the kayak.  I think it’s the hatch cover.  Let me tell you why…

Underdog to the Rescue

tootherescue09

If you look at this picture and guess that Derrick is about to enjoy towing a flooded, rental bathtub and a slightly hypothermic swimmer to shore, you’re right!  I have a theory about that.   It’s the kayak.  If you paddle an Explorer by Sea Kayaking UK you will simply end up in situations where you must tow people.  Even on tiny little lakes in the middle of Wisconsin. Here at Devil’s Lake State Park I’ve “rescued” enough poor holiday kayakers and canoeists that I have lost count. But it was today when it suddenly struck me…  Every friggin’ time I’ve towed someone I’ve been paddling my warhorse.  What’s that about!?  It must be the breed. :)

Boreal Shores Kayaking

Patty the Milkmaid was going to market carrying her milk in a Pail on her head. As she went along she began calculating…

Did I ever tell you the story of the day Nigel Dennis was late?  It’s sort of like an Aesop’s Fable without a fox, crow, or nightingale to found.  Now I could tell you that tale or I could send you to Boreal Shores Kayaking in Bayfield, WI., where the story is said to have taken place.  Boreal Shores offers Sea Kayaking UK Kayaks, kayak gear and camping equipment at the gateway to the Apostle Islands on the southern shore of  Lake Superior.  Now if you go there be sure to sit in the pink Explorer when Chris tells you the tale.. and then maybe he’ll regale you with the one about when Derrick was really, really drunk and asked him to build a traveling, folding, skin boat.. I’m not sure, but I think there may be a donkey & a milkmaid in that story!  – Visit Boreal Shores Kayaking Website right here.

Draw Me A Circle

If you ask a new paddling student to simply paddle forward then turn their kayak in motion, without further instruction they will inevitably produce a stern rudder.  They reach back with their paddle on the side they want to turn, set the blade in the water, and push out.  The kayak turns.  I like having students do this, so I can label it and change “a thing they do” into a skill simply through the power of linguistics.  It helps them start thinking all this kayak stuff may not be so tough.  Heck they can make some of it up without really trying!

Construction

Pardon the mess while I do a little website destruction over the next few hours.  Every so often we need to clean out the cobwebs and come up with a fresh look.  Changing the look is actually the easy part, fixing all the fiddle bits… that’s what takes for ever.  So relax and enjoy a Mediterranean sunset off the coast of Sdat Yam in Israel!

Deep

And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
And it’s me you need to show
How deep is your love

The draw is another paddling skill that can be improved very quickly simply by tweaking a couple things, namely hand position and torso rotation.  So let’s look at those today.
