them apples

Some people would never plant fruit trees in their yard because they hate the mess.  For a couple weeks a year I totally get their point.

Today is the first day of school in this part of the world.  The news is raging about a predicted up-swing in Swine Flu cases, hospitalizations and deaths because everyone is sending their kids to school, while reminding everyone to send their kids to school.  Ah…?

The Pacific ocean has a garbage patch so big that no one really thinks we can do anything about it.. really, we’ve accepted defeat, gave up.. really.

And speaking of lost causes… The thing I hate about climate change or the health care debate in this country is that it seems to be that no matter how you look at it, at the core  it’s all about profit vs altruism.  My closet hippie says that in the end doing the right thing is always profitable, even if you don’t make any money doing it.  I’m probably wrong but I can’t see much of an upside to being a profiteering, self-oriented, greedy, narcissistic, short-sighted, jack ass .. well, other than being rich of course…

I had planned to be on a plane to Scotland today to have a visit with Nessie.  As you know I decided to hold off until next summer.  I needed more time to study that Google Earth image..

What is it about getting older that makes me avoid thought provoking entertainment?  These days I look for distraction rather than inspiration or enlightenment.  Gone are the days of deep, mind twisting novels and movies filled with social commentary.. Now I’m on to comic books and Simpson re-runs..   I think I’m starting to feel like I’ve heard it all before… or maybe there is simply a point in life when you just can’t get any more aware & bummed out…

The Farmer’s Almanac says winter will be insanely cold in the Midwest this year… NOAA says it will be warmer than usual… So what they are saying is, that the Farmer’s Almanac is right…

Speaking of entertainment.  I always hated American TV programs and loved the BBC.  These days I still hate American TV and James Murdoc is worried about competition from the BBC.. I think I’m having Felicity Kendal flashbacks …

And Speaking of H1N1… Wisconsin pork producers are stomping their hooves over the use of the word “Swine” in the name “Swine Flu”… Apparently sales aren’t down due to the flu’s name specifically.. it just makes them feel bad when they head off to work in the morning…  and “Swine” used to be such a positive word…

I used to play in a rock band.. A real one.. As someone who burned my fingertips with a lighter so I could practice playing guitar more.. I wonder why the game can’t at least make kids put their fingers in the right spots?  Maybe they’d learn something useful besides the lyrics to “Sweet Home Alabama” which we all know comes in quite handy at times…

Why is the Nutcracker Suite suddenly emanating from the living room?

Now where was I?  Oh yeah.. Kayaking…

All that garbage patch in the pacific needs is an entrepraneur with a big enough boat and the realization that all that plastic means petrochemicals that they can resalvage, give it time, it’ll happen
