Open Road

I can’t speak for others, but I can speak for myself when I say the coming of autumn fills me with the desire to hit the open road…

And now a road connects the cul-de-sac
To the adjacent development
But there used to be trees stretching back
And there was no way through

So a friend noticed by new black Kokatat MSFit.. I actually left it in the box for a few days before I opened it.  I’m giddy as an 8 year old over it and so thankful Kokatat could make it happen.  Ah, now the thing is who do I refer people to who want a black MSfit of their own?  Sorry, but you knew that was  gonna happen! (What with slippery slopes and all that…)

Quick Tip

greenland-yesWords are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe

No need to pontificate. Well other than to fill a bit of space and to satisfy the RSS feeds that ignore pictures.  Did I say there was no need to pontificate? Oh, ok then. Sorry.  Well, here’s the thing that there is no need to rabbit on about, but which can be addressed with 2 pictures.  If you’re new to a Greenland paddle and you are trying to learn that whole sculling thing there is one common mistake you should avoid right off. It’s where you put your inside (my left, your right in the picture above.) hand.  You should grip the paddle around the blade and not…

Valley Goes Back To the.. Well,

valley-wayback09

Here’s what you’ll see if you visit Valley Sea Kayaks today.  This is their website circa 2005 or so.  If you search Valley Sea Kayaks on Google you’ll see : “Parallels H-Sphere Account has been suspended Account suspended. Account for domain valleyseakayaks.com has been suspended…” Now, this happens on the web.  A server goes down, a host goes under, a payment is missed… whatever.  Heck you can even lose your fancy new website and have to put up the old one until you can get all the back end stuff up again.  If it were me, I’d put up a fresh little notice that something’s going on.  Otherwise someone with a fragile mind might log in to buy a kayak and suddenly think they’ve slipped back in time.. Now you would’nt want the repercussions of that on your head would you?  What did an Anas Acuta cost in 2005?

“The truth is that longer boats offer little to no advantage at touring speeds, which for the vast majority of sea touring kayakers, rarely exceed 4 knots.  In fact drag data among many kayak models illustrates that shorter boats often have less drag at these speeds.  Add to this the effect of wind and waves and a small paddler can find themselves struggling with a kayak that is just too much for them to handle.  Where’s the fun in that?” – notes from Necky Eliza designer.  Read More Here.   Thoughts?

Sun Shine

Well, who are you? / I really wanna know
Tell me, who are you? / ‘Cause I really wanna know
– who

Here’s a kayak I’d never seen before.  Check out that hull shape. It’s a “Sun” which apparently is or was a Riot Kayak at one time.  Other than that there is really not much information within the grip of Google’s long bony fingers.

The last few days I’ve been tucked in around home working on a few various projects including an update of my busy website, DevilsLakeWisconsin.com which has in the range of 200,000 visitors a month during the peak summer season and slims down to a mere 60,000 or so in the winter months.   The Devil’s Lake website is a perfect combination of business, life & pleasure as it helps me pay for groceries, Continue reading

Sunsets

I can’t light no more of your darkness
All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
– john/taupin

You’ll have to guess who the guy is in this week’s feature photo on the homepage.  I took it one evening while we were sitting on the beach of North Manitou Island off the coast of the state of Michigan.  The sunset just kept getting more spectacular as sun slipped down to meet the horizon.  I remember thinking at the time it must be the whiskey, but I look at the pictures today and think, “No, it really was just that amazing.”.   Remember, with the new website design I will feature a new “cover” shot each week as well as featured links in the sidebar’s “On The Radar” box.
