Our friend Dominique was kind enough to share with us some of his pictures from this year’s Delmarva Paddler’s Retreat. Delmarva was founded in 1988 by Charlie and Cindy Cole and is the unrivaled Mecca of Greenland style paddling. (This side of Greenland of course!!) The annual event held in Lewes, Delaware is considered the place where Greenland style really kicked off here in the states. Attendees learn traditional paddling skills, attend lectures & workshops, and of course spend a lot of time rolling! Most paddlers with a passion for G-Style make it a goal to at least once be able to attend Delmarva.

Traditional paddling events such as Delmarva in DE, QajaqTC in Michigan and others as well, have a totally different vibe than a more standard sea kayaking symposium.  It’s still all about learning.  Attendees  can learn traditional paddling techniques, enjoy workshops, presentations & of course learn all the kayak rolling they can handle. Still the events are much less ridged in their structures allowing plenty of time for paddlers and mentors to work freely on just the bits most important to them.  They are special events in deed.

To learn more about Delmarva Paddler’s Retreat just visit their website right here.  If you’d like to attend the event next year I have one tip, follow their news and register as soon as possible before the event.  Greenland events are small and personal.. but that means they are sometimes hard to get into.

For more information about Greenland style sea kayaking visit QajaqUSA.  This is THE G-Style website with lots of articles, video clips, forums and so much more.

So which is the right name? Traditional Kayaking? Greenland Style? G-Style?.. Well whatever you want to call it is fine although “G-Style” might get you in trouble with the guys in long beards. :)

Thanks again Dominique for sharing some of your photos.  It looks like a wonderful location.

Thanks for posting the pictures from Delmarva and for giving a really good summary of Delmarva and other Greenland style events. This year there were 6 people from Greenland, 3 were teenagers. Some of the events were stealth paddling led by Jon Pederson of Greenland, skin-on-frame kayak building, rolling and rescue classes, water games and races, ropes. It was a wonderful cultural exchange and lots of fun!
