Summer? That must mean product testing season is here again! Well, you know how it goes around here… Like you, it seems when I’ve finally solved all my clothing & gear problems there’s always something that needs to be replaced or something that just didn’t work out. Sometimes, I just trip into trying out new products. Take these Sabino Trail™ Mid GTXs by Montrail for instance…
As you know, one of my passions is trail running and as I mentioned before, I missed a gully a few weeks back and really rolled my ankle. Well, the doc said I could get back out there but I needed to find running shoes with ankle support. Right-E-oh! Thing is, anyone who’s into trail running can tell you that stiff ankles is the last thing you want. In fact, as a kayaker I relish in the play of balance and weight shifting involved in running uneven, rock strewn trails, and the ankle is where most of that “shifting” hinges. Be that as it may, until I heal I need to follow doctor’s orders. Which leads me right back to the lack of running shoes with support…
After dropping a couple hundred bucks on other brands that were frankly just too stiff or too heavy I was offered the opportunity to review Montrail’s Sabino Trail™ Mid GTX. At this point I’ve barely had them out of the box and have worn them only enough to make sure they fit well, which they do. Right off I noticed they are not too stiff on the ankle but do seem to provide just enough support to calm that little “tweak” I still get when my ankle is pressed to the outside. I also recognized that the heel is quite tight while the toe-box has extra room which is normally a good sign with a running shoe. For the moment I’m going to leave it there and will come back with a more formal review later in the summer once I get a chance to beat them up a bit.
That’s not all I’ve got coming up on the product review slate for the season. I’m trying out a new ultra-cheap Penxtax Optio waterproof camera.. I know, I know, but for $105 bucks it might last long enough to earn the price. I’ll be reviewing some Adventure Gear Products from GearPods and coming back to the P&H Scorpio kayak one year later. I’ve also been putting some Ahnu aqua-shoes to the test as well. I’m sure we’ll have something to say about first adopters & buyer’s remorse along the way but let’s save that for a later date shall we?
Anyway, lots of new stuff to play with and talk about in the coming weeks. I certainly hope we find some real values in the mix. You know, stuff that does what they say it does, and will last more than a single season! Lator Gator!
