Marcus Demuth, Windscreen.

sometimes you’re the windshield / sometimes you’re the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby / sometimes you’re a fool in love
sometimes you’re the louisville slugger / sometimes you’re the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby… – Dire Straits

I‘ve written about Marcus Demuth before.  More than many expedition paddlers out there he’s had his share of ups and downs. Yet  no matter what happens, it seems he’s right there ready to give things another go as well.  So even though he kept things a bit quiet this time around, he still went out and did something few people have ever done.  He paddled solo around Great Britain.

Marcus completed the circumnavigation on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Just to add a bit of spice, it looks like he has the record for fastest solo circumnavigation as well doing the 2,540 miles in just 80 days. By the way,  Barry Shaw, Phil Clegg and Harry Wheeler did the trip together in 80 days as well. Now I mention the “record” because it’s certainly a milestone, but from what I’ve picked up of Marcus over the years I bet that  “New Speed Record” came as a surprise.  He just doesn’t come across as a ‘record’ sort of guy.  He seems more of a “sometimes you’re the windscreen and sometimes you’re the bug” sort of guy.  This time around Marcus get’s to be the windscreen.  Fantastic!

You can read a bit more about Marcus’s GB trip…

He was so fast! Was he participating in a race of one?
I think a woman should solo next, and we all know who that should be.

Thanks for the heads-up–he kept this trip so quiet.

    BTW: It’s Marcus D-E-M-U-T-H. No “R”.

  • Got to finally meet Marcus at a Connyak presentation highlighting his Tiera Le Fuego and GB expeditions. Inspiring. This guy is all meat – and no potatoes and would have had Ernest Hemingway as a fan if he was still alive. If there is one thing Marcus taught me in the several hours – it was to grab life by the bal_s and hang on for the ride. I will take this lesson and apply it this summer on my own expedition. (much shorter of course)

    Thanks Marcus!
