Don’t Stop The Rain
Long as I remember The rain been coming down.
Clouds of myst’ry pouring Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Trying to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who’ll stop the rain. – ccr
After a successful day of rolling on Thursday, you wouldn’t be surprised if Mary wanted to get back out and lock in her roll the following morning. Now, some could say that the weather didn’t cooperate but I’d say it did exactly what it should have done. It upped the ante…
Many new rollers or folks who’ve just learned a new way to roll, will lose that roll again within an hour or a day or two of gaining it. That’s normal. It takes time for the new information become inculcated in the mind and the body. They may also find that new roll will go away as soon as they are faced with new conditions; Cold water, lack of nose plugs, new location, waves or wind and rain. That’s why it’s important to take our new skills out regularly to be tested in a variety of conditions whenever it’s safe to do so.
That brings me back to yesterday. We had just paddled across the lake under a somewhat warning sky, and the wind began to pick up. At our local lake the hills block the horizon on all directions so you can never be sure what’s coming…. About 100 yards off the beach heavy gusts began to push across the surface of the lake. Nothing you couldn’t paddle against, but enough to test the boat handling skills of your average paddler. The upside is there was really no thunder or lightning to speak of. That opened up a perfect opportunity for Mary to test her new found roll in conditions that were safe, but certainly a bit more stress inducing.. You’ll see by the video she did just fine. [Here are some more photos from yesterday as well] – The kayak is my Rockpool Alaw Bach.
