Coyotes & Snowshoes

One day you’ll wake up in the present day
a million generations removed from expectations
of being who you really want to be.
– tull

I was going to start off today’s post with some metered prose about aging.  Then I thought.. WTF!!??  So I decided to spend a bit more time sharing with you what I’ve learned about snowshoes..  then the coyotes got in the way..  and there was something about rabbits… Continue reading

I didn’t really do anything altruistic…

I’m going where the sun keeps shining
Thru’ the pouring rain,
Going where the weather suits my clothes,

Like many of you I get my share of kayak related emails and newsletters almost daily.  (I apologize to the dudes who try to make money with them, but I get so many that I rarely read them any longer.)  That however, brings me to something I did read through the PaddleWise mailing list recently.  It started out saying, “I didn’t really do anything altruistic or with team spirit,..” which was more than enough to catch my eye. ;) I then realized it was from Duane Strosaker who many of us know through his shark encounter in 2010.  The subject of the mailing was sharing your 2010 paddling highlights.   Here’s the rest of Duane’s entry…. That would be sweet!

Sometimes love don’t feel like it should
You make it hurt so good

Sometimes paddling sucks.  You can be out the middle of nowhere, miles from home, cold, wet, hungry, tired and sick of the company.  Sometimes the water is freezing, sometimes it’s only 3 inches deep and you end up dragging your kayak more than you paddle it.  Sometimes the water is huge and scary, in fact the only thing scarier than paddling in it is trying to land.  Paddling is great, don’t get me wrong… but some days it just sucks.  Sitting here today on January 11th, 2011 as the snow is blowing around outside my window across a frozen, grey, Wisconsin landscape… I’d give anything to be suffering through a paddling day that really sucked…

That would be sweet!

Snowshoes Stop You From Sinking

We’re workin’ our jobs, collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway, when in fact we’re slip sliding away
– p. simon

My snowshoe journey continued yesterday as I took my first silly steps through the local state park.  One thing I learned, the most obvious thing, is that snowshoes stop you from sinking.  My hiking partner without snowshoes, (And substantially less um, sturdy than I am, I may add!) sank about 5 inches into the virgin snow of the abandon Northern Lights campground.  With my cool new snowshoes under foot, I sank maybe an inch or two at most.  Well, that’s what they are made for right?  Continue reading

Have you checked out Ann Lee Carpenter’s kayaking website yet?  I’ve only started to look around the site myself.  GoneSeaKayaking.com provides a variety of information as well as a sea kayaking events calendar.  I’m always happy to share new kayaking related projects as they come up and I’m happy to see another paddler expanding on their kayak addiction.  Be sure to check out GoneSeaKayaking.com

Snowshoes on the Cheap

Just an acre of land
And we’ll have what we need
A peasant’s dream
– burning hearts

Ok, so I started out talking about skiing.. I’m fickle that way.  Well, no. Actually ski gear is much more of an investment than snow shoes and the only thing I’m sure about with skis at the moment is the bindings I want.  I’d better move on that soon or it will be spring!  One the other hand, in-expensive snowshoes can be an impulse buy.
