Enviromentalism

I wouldn’t call myself an environmentalist any more than I’d call myself a house-ist. I live in my house, so it’s obvious to me that I must take care of it. There’s always cleaning, repairing and replacing to do because our house is a hundred years old and, well, lived in. It’s not a faith or a political leaning, it’s not a badge I wear for show, it’s just life. I also spend a lot of time out-of-doors. So environmentalism touches me in the very same way. I have a hard time figuring out people who destroy and abuse our environment. I mean, do they wiz on their couch? Maybe they do…
Well, many of you may not know that some of the world’s most well known environmentalists had their start right here in Wisconsin. John Muir came here from Scotland as a boy. (Well, about 15 miles from here.) Aldo Leopold‘s legendary cabin is actually only a few minutes from my own little shack. Now the reason I’m on about this today is that there is a new film about Aldo Leopold touring the country called Green Fire. Its Wisconsin premiere will be held right here in just a few days. I’m giving away a couple tickets in fact. I wrote a bit about that & a bit more about my quirky views on environmentalism right here. For what it’s worth…..
Black Swan
I’m a total Radiohead freak. As some say, there are those that like Neil Diamond.. (or in this case Thom York)… So as you could expect I was watching the new video for Lotus Flower within an hour of it being posted on YouTube. In the last 24 hours like a thousand mashups have been posted as well. Personally I like ” Thom Yorke auditions for a part in Black Swan” the best. (See Above). And what’s that got to do with kayaking? Nothing at all.

I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away

It’s that time of year again. It’s February, it’s cold and everything is frozen. Still the clouds are just dark enough and heavy enough to make you think that a spring rain has to be right around the corner. What’s worse is that the spring rain occasionally shows up…. for a time anyway. Then just when your hopes begin to get out from under the oppression of winter, you get another snowstorm. That’s where Canoecopia comes in.

and we saw the queen in the sky

Tech-head paddlers have all talked about waterproof phones and cameras for some time now. Heck, even I’m guilty of fanning sick fantasies of playing with our iPods, iPads, Androids and every other sort of gizmo out on the water. I even encourage paddlers to listen to music when they practice their kayak rolling. Personally I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd, Radiohead, or Bat For Lashes during pool sessions for years. If you’re into taking your toys on (or in) the water, there’s no end to the number of waterproof cases and headphones to choose from these days. Where things get sticky, is when you start looking for ways to talk. Continue reading
