Today at Canoecopia in Madison, WI., Danny Mongo of Werner Paddles was demonstrating… well… I’m not sure actually what he was demonstrating, but I think it was something about paddles. I hope it was about paddles. Either that or he’s making a topical observation on current state of Wisconsin politics… I’ll just be done now, other than to say you can listen to Danny talk about selecting your perfect paddle on this podcast.
Canoecopia Saturday ReTwit

The upside of smart phones is that you can quickly take photos, write a bit of text and instantly serve it up online. The downside is that you can quickly take photos, write a bit of text and instantly serve it up online… The camera sorta sucks a lot, and the typos… well, I’m famous for typos! I blasted off the shot above as a was strolling through the atrium of the Alliant Energy Center yesterday. The Coastguard auxiliary seemed to be reaching out to the next generation (Or going through a second childhood!). Continue reading
Kids & The Outdoors… Can Suck.
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play
Can you teach me to throw”, I said “Not today
I got a lot to do”, he said, “That’s ok”

I was reading a post from a fellow paddle blogger this morning about a kayak trip with his kids. It looked like a great time. In fact we often read about parents taking their kids out on paddling / camping trips and having the most wonderful and memorable trips of their lifetime. That’s nice. Really. Thing is.. sometimes it sucks.
I’ll never walk around the kitchen with a “World’s Greatest Dad” mug in one hand and a copy of “Parenting Monthly” in the other. I never went on camping trips or canoeing with “dear old dad” when I was a kid. I never wore plaid, portaged a canoe, or made flapjacks on a wood fire. Continue reading
10 Useless Tips For Canoecopia
There’s a brand new shopping center seven storys high
There’s bound to be a sale or two–something we can buy
There’s four floors of parking and we’re sure to find a space
We’ll spend all the money that the government doesn’t take
– warren zevon
It’s hardly worth me adding to the din surrounding Canoecopia in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend. Still, after working the show for years, maybe I can give you a little useless advice… You know what they say about experts…
1. Don’t Buy A Kayak… Unless..
The folks at Rutabaga will tell you the same thing (I hope!). Don’t buy a kayak unless you’ve paddled it before. Your butt is not a good tool for testing kayaks. Yeah, there are great prices and the sales ppl will get you all buzzed up for sure. Walk away.. go sit in your car and get really cold for awhile. Then, if you still need to buy a boat that you’ve never paddled before.. go back in. Put money down on the kayak, then test paddle it at Rutabaga once the snow melts. Yeah, you can do that. Well, you used to anyway. Ask! Oh, and by the way.. Plastic kayaks are OK… really. (*See darren’s comment below!) Continue reading
Dizzy

Dizzy, I’m so dizzy my head is spinning / Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s You girl makin’ it spin / You’re making me dizzy
– tommy roe
Feeling a bit dizzy? It’s OK. Here’s why: You’re standing (or sitting) on the earth which is spinning at about 750 miles per hour. Meanwhile the earth is rotating around the sun at about 67,000 miles per hour. The sun and all it’s planets (including us) are racing around the center of the Milky Way at about 558,000 mph. And the whole universe is whizzing out from the point of the big bang at 1,339,200 mph. Something to think about this Friday March 4th, 2011.
Pardon Me, Inspector!

Spring! Spring! Spring! Well, no. But soon! For many paddlers stuck up here in the great white north, the anticipation of getting back on open water is palpable. We are just going crazy!! (Hardly noticeable in my case…) Now what really sucks, is when you finally get some open water and you run to your closet only to find the gasket on your drysuit has turned to goo over the winter!! Suddenly you’re on your knees, arms outstretched to the heavens shouting out your best B-Movie, ” NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. Well, before that tragedy happens to you, I’d suggest you get to your closet now and start inspecting your gear right now! Continue reading
What it’s About

I’m surprised there is not more talk about the Wisconsin demonstrations in the outdoor industry. Yeah, the jaded part of me says that since only those with money can afford expensive toys.. you don’t want to tick ‘em off by taking the side of unions or labor. I’d hope it’s not that simple. Still, the thing that gets lost in all the hoopla is that while labor and unions are getting all the attention, our environment is under assault as well. Here in Wisconsin the “budget repair” bill and the proposed budget are among other things; cutting requirements to disinfect drinking water, rolling back recent regulations regarding the emission of phosphorus which causes weed and algae growth in lakes and streams, eliminating recycling mandates and funding, take away Department of Natural Resources Wardens the right to bargain (While preserving the right for other law enforcement & firefighters), making it harder to acquire land for preservation and recreation through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, cutting funding for cycling & pedestrian trails.. and that’s just what has been ferreted out so far. Not to mention the all out war on public education and the poor. THAT’s why there are people in the streets and sleeping in our state capitol every night. Meanwhile many major newspapers across the country are stating very frankly that Wisconsin is not actually facing a budget crisis at all. This is a battle of ideologies. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Now sure, I’d like to just go paddling out into the middle of a lake and forget about it. I can hike, snowshoe, or jump on my bike to escape the anger that wells up every time I think of what these rules mean for our to the environment, to the elderly, mentally ill, and other people dependent on assistance, not to mention the teachers, plow truck drivers, DNR wardens and the myriad other public workers that make our world better every day. It ticks me off when I see what this will do to low income families. Oh, and yeah, this is a total cock-up when it comes to Wisconsin’s reputation for outdoor recreation & tourism. What living, breathing, vital human being can just ignore it?
In 8 days the Canoecopia, the worlds largest paddle sports show will be held just a couple miles from Wisconsin’s state capitol building. That means a lot of us in the business and just outdoor lovers in general are going to have a perfect opportunity to show solidarity with the unions, just as the Sierra Club has already done. If we want to protect our environment I’m not sure we can just go paddling and leave it to the activists to sort out.. I think maybe we all need to speak up this time.
