Check it out! Kokatat has just gone live with their fancy new website! And it is pretty nice. (That coming from someone who does this stuff for a living.) The new site is clean and easy to navigate and maybe most importantly, full of big beautiful pictures! I like how the feature carousel invites users to simply click on the sport they’re into, to be presented with the right gear for them. It’s sort of a suggestion box, navigation and sales tool all in one. Once in your chosen category, there are all sorts of ways to easily sift through the content to find something specific. It’s also nice to simply browse through the updated pictures. Mobile addicts will be pleased to note that a mobile friendly interface is coming soon as well. One thing though… I’m not quite sure what “Sort by Mojo” means? Calling Austin Powers! Continue reading
Mega Squid Versus The Giant Lake Stugeon

Now somehow (That I can’t even begin to explain!) this story weaves its way from Australia on to Charleston, South Carolina and through the mind of Moulton Avery, before landing on the blog of Helen Wilson before totally spinning out of control and landing here. Here at Quixotica, where I dare Moulton to bring his evil Humbolt Squid with their tentacles, barb-wire type hooks, and fearsome parrot-like beaks to battle my genetically modified, radioactive & radio controlled Giant Lake sturgeon. I’ll soon have those squid sorted!
If all of this has a sort of Mystery Science Theatre feel about it, well it should. Because I think a lot of people spent the frozen winter months watching movies like Mega Shark Versus The Giant Octopus & the amazing sequel, Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus. Kayaker types mainly. All I can say is that the careers of Lorenzo Lamas & Debbie Gibson has taken an amazing turn in recent years. Chances are they will be seen in This Is The Sea 5 battling various rubber suited monsters from the cockpits of a fully armed Tahe Marines. If William Shatner is any guide, these 2 will soon be up for the ACTRA Montreal Award of Excellence within a year and on their way to Emmys.
Now you have to admit, this scene from MSVGO is better than anything Cecil B. DeMille could have pulled off in his wildest dreams…
Yeah, that’s the way we do it downtown!
Contaminated Iodine Prep Pads

On March 18th of this year the FDA posted a recall of Iodine Prep Pads made by Wisconsin company, H&P Industries, due to possible contamination. Anyone showing adverse effects are encouraged to fill out a form. Assuming of course, that the adverse effects don’t prevent you from filling out the form! I became aware of the recall a couple of days back when I received new iodine prep pads from GearPods. I have to say, they are always on top of updates and fixes related to their products. I give them credit for that. Continue reading
10 (More) Sea Kayaks to Try Before You Buy
The problem with selecting 10 kayaks for folks to try is that you inherently leave out 400 others. Some readers will think that when you leave something off, it’s a personal slight or that you are being limited or intentionally “bias”. Of course you’re not. The limit is simply in your personal goal and how long you want your list to be. It’s fair to say every paddler in the world will have a different list… With that in mind, here’s another “10 sea kayaks you should try” list from fellow paddle blogger Bryan Hansel. He writes about canoeing and kayaking at Paddlinglight.com. Take it away Bryan!
Stickers!

I’ve always enjoyed collecting stickers. Most of the time people see it at as one of my eleven-hundred and sixteen off-kilter quirks. Sometimes they think I’m just stupid. Could be. Others think it’s just a clever way to keep the gelcoat from falling off my boat. It’s probably all of the above. I can tell you that I was pretty sad when we traded in my old black Jeep for no other reason than about 25 great stickers went with it. So long great big, backwards Werner sticker, I hope you are happy wherever you are!! Continue reading
Songs of Experience
Children of the future Age,
Reading this indignant page:
Know that in a former time,
Love! sweet Love! was thought a crime – blake
Yesterday I wrote about 10 sea kayaks that everyone should at least test paddle before they invest in a brand new sea kayak. One reader commented that I should have included at least one of the great traditional or Greenland kayak in the group. I got his point. Today I’ll talk about that a bit and explain why no Greenland style kayaks made the list and tell you which ones would have if they, well, would have.. Continue reading
10 Sea Kayaks You Should Paddle Before You Buy
Oh well, there’s Flo on my left and there’s Mary on my right / And Janie is the girl with that I’ll be with tonight
And when she asks me, which one I love the best? / I tear open my shirt I got Rosie on my chest
‘Cause I’m the wanderer / Yeah, the wanderer / I roam around, around, around – Dion
Sea kayaks are expensive. To be honest, reading alone won’t tell you what you need to know before you drop $3,000 or more on a top-of-the-line kayak. You have to paddle them to know how they feel to you. What’s more, how you feel in a particular kayak may be nothing like what someone else feels in that same boat. That means, no one can really tell you what the right kayak is for you. From there you can infer that what I’m about to tell you.. is worthless.. but read on if you like! Continue reading
