Beer Buzz?

The problem with ultra low-calorie beer is that it tastes like something akin to beer flavored mineral water.  Add a lemon or lime and it’s not so bad!  The trick with beer (or any alcohol) and boating is to leave the bottle closed until after you’re off the water. When it comes to kayaking, I’ll admit that a couple of times I’ve done it the other way round. That was enough to teach me what a stupid idea that was.  Even a very slight buzz is enough to make you a sloppy, inefficient paddler. Not to mention inattentive and slow. I’m sorry, you need your reaction time on the water every bit as much as you need it on the road. It seems like someone is always giving speeches about how drinking and boating don’t mix.  I’m not going to preach, I’m just going to say there’s no point. It’s no fun anyway. Save the beer the end of the day.  Hopefully you don’t have to settle for low-cal!

Scary Bunnies

“Oh, great! Any more and we’ll be able to do a production of bloody Watership Down!”

People have said I can find the dark side of anything.. Well,  judging from these strange Easter bunny costumes from a 1996 episode of “The Vicar of Dibley”, I’m not the only one. These are some scary bunnies! And speaking of finding the dark side, you’d never guess what I came across while out hiking on the Ice Age Trails yesterday.. an Easter basket!!  Now what could be dark about an Easter basket?  Continue reading

The Good Fight

Jesus if I had to quit tonight / I’d never know if I was wrong or right
But that’s just what you get / You gotta go the distance
If you’re gonna fight a good fight,
Keep it up & keep a good fight – buffett

Today I jumped on the scales again. It’s a Saturday morning ritual. Well, actually it’s a daily, and sometimes many-times-daily ritual. Saturday though, is “THE” day.  It’s the day I actually write down the result in the bottom right hand corner of the Saturday box on my big dining room calendar.  Sure, anyone can see it, but more importantly it’s there for me to see.  It’s there to remind me why one malted Easter egg an hour before bed is almost better than, well, you know.. 3.5

I knew a girl who tried to walk across the lake, / course it was winter when all this was ice.
Thats a hell of a thing to do, you know. / They say the lake is as big as the ocean.
I wonder if she knew about it? – Yoko Ono

Today I spent the wee hours of my morning looking at the 3point5.com system for outdoor industry pros.  The “point” as it were, is to get retail salespeople to earn their pro-deal discounts (You did know that salespeople sometimes get discounts right?) by learning more about the products & companies they sell.  Not a bad idea. Nothing more painful to watch than a salesperson who has no clue what they’re on about!! Continue reading

Snow on the Water

Wisconsin? You’d better believe it!  Most people don’t realize that white pelican’s make their home in Wisconsin.  Large numbers nest each year near Green Bay and Lake Winnebago to the north-east of my home here in the central part of the state.  These guys were hanging out in Lake Wisconsin.  In general, they will only stay a couple of weeks before moving on.  Still, it’s nice to see them here in the land of Canada geese and Wood Ducks… Speaking of which…  Continue reading

Best Waterproof Camera Today?

Of course this is junk! (water getting in…) Don’t get me started on Pentax… No, we’ve moved on but it’s been a couple of years since I’ve bought a new waterproof compact camera and I could use your advice.  What’s working for you these days? Cannon? Fuji? Lumix? Olympus?  Remember what we’re shootin’ for here.  Fits in a PFD pocket, easy to manage with one hand, handles light well and can produce sharp images on lumpy water.. What say you experts?

Ultimate Direction Access Waist Pack

In addition to sea kayaking I’m a hiking addict.  I run as well, but when it comes to running, um, I wouldn’t call myself an “addict”.  Running is something that just “has to be done”. This is what brings me to today’s review of the Ultimate Direction Access Waist pack.  I didn’t buy it after shopping around, browsing websites or reading reviews.  I bought it because I was on my way out to run and I was desperate to take my music, a water bottle and my car keys without all the hassle of previous years. That, and because it was the only real option in the only outdoor shop in town.  Sometimes that’s just how life goes! Continue reading
