Madness & Method

Everyone teaches rolling in their own personal way. Over the years I’ve learned that as instructors we need to be flexible. While we all may begin with a mental outline that serves us well most of the time, we quickly adjust that outline to fit each individuals needs. Take Helen Wilson for example.. With this student she thought it would help if she dressed up like a big yellow and blue bunny rabbit… Continue reading
Strange Pics of the Kokatat Crüe

There’s no lack of Kokatat faces up here at the Great lakes Sea Kayak Symposium this year.. and I’ve taken some really odd pictures of most of them.. Like Kelly Blades (above) looking a bit more psychotic than usual. “So we have you signed up to enter the dark recess of your soul.. Is that correct?” Continue reading
Tiny Boats, Big Sea

Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore on Lake Superior is an amazing place to paddle. In fact, you can see a couple of paddlers in the picture I took today from above Miner’s Castle near Munising, MI. It’s great to see people out enjoying the view and taking part in the sport of sea kayaking… but let’s take a closer look … Continue reading
Stoned.. (and nicely toasted)

It’s much warmer today. I got up early to take a long stroll along the Lake Superior shoreline. You think a lot of things when walk an empty beach alone first thing in the morning. One thing I was thinking about this morning was how much power it must take to toss all these fist sized stones up onto the beach. There’s a lot of power in a big surf. On the other hand I always see a few swimmers out there standing in the surf enjoying being blasted by the waves. But look at all those stones! I began to wonder.. how come swimmers aren’t occasionally getting stoned within inches of their lives out there in that surf? I wondered if anyone had ever been pasted upside the head with a big rock while playing out in the surf? Well, that was just one of the things I was wondering…
Sorry Bear,
I’m sorry Bear. I was hard up for a knife and I was nowhere near a paddleshop. In a moment of weakness I bought one of your Gerber Bear Grylls signature knives. I had to. I didn’t have time to order a real man.. Um, I mean, “real SEA KAYKER’S” knife. I should have known I was in for trouble when your knife cut my finger the first time I opened it. Luckily when I got to the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium they had a real HE-Man Seakayaker’s knife. Continue reading
Arrived!

I popped out of the tent early this morning to watch the sun rise one last time over Lake Michigan before we drove the rest of the way across the UP up to Grand Marais for the sea kayak symposium on the shore of Lake Superior. As with most sunrises, I wasn’t disappointed. Watching a sunrise is a sure sign you survived to live another day. If you get to watch the sun rise over open water.. It’s probably going to be a great day. Continue reading
Keeping The Faith in Two Rivers

I had a message on my phone from local Two Rivers paddler & coach John Bodwin, inviting me to join him (And a guy who suspiciously looks like Nigel Dennis) for an evening paddling at the Neshotah beach along the big lake. It had been some time since I’d paddled this section of Lake Michigan and after a hot bike ride on the Mariner trail between Two Rivers and Manitowoc, I was more than ready to get on the water! When I arrived the air temps were still in the mid-80s and the lake was as calm as I’ve seen it since we kicked off this trip. What a great way to end the day! Continue reading
