Did you know that Canoecopia tickets are already available for 2012? Ticket prices went up for 2012, but if you get on your horse you can save a bit by purchasing yours online right away. I’m assuming you already know that Canoecopia is the countries largest paddle sports expo and is held each year in Madison, Wisconsin. This year’s dates are March 9th – 11th. I’ll see you there.. somewhere…
Meanwhile 45 miles to the north of Madison, I spend my Thanksgiving day paddling around Devil’s Lake… Surprise, Surprise!! That marked day 27 leaving me only 7 days to go to hit my 100 mile goal. Now I’m actually dragging my heels to get my last day in as near to the end of the year as possible. I think it would be sweet to wrap up on New Year’s eve day… It’s all up to old man winter at this point. I posted a small gallery of pics from Thanksgiving day over on Flickr. (Click Here) Nice moody day, Canada Geese, Bald Eagle… great day to be on the water!
I’m A PC… Sometimes…

And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through

Gear wars are gear wars. It doesn’t matter if it’s paddling, cars or technology. Lendal or Werner? Valley or Current Designs? Chevy or Ford? Whatever. The important question for any sane person is what is the best tool for the job. When that doesn’t narrow the field, it’s all just a matter of personal taste. Of course there’s no accounting for taste! That’s probably why we now own our first Mac. Continue reading
Out of Nowhere

I’m still out there… somewhere, paddling. You know what they say, if you’re out doing it, you’re too busy to be sitting home writing about it! Yeah, well, on a microscopic level that’s true. The time I used to devote to blogging has been taken up in the mornings by paddling or hiking. I just haven’t been of a mind to write recently. If you blog long enough, you realize that the muse comes and goes. Right now, I’m mostly inspired to be outdoors, doing. The picture above is from yesterday morning’s circuit around the lake. It was a cold, windy morning filled with ice, waterfowl and cat’s paws. Continue reading
Another day…

Only 10 days left and I’ll finally have my 100 miles down. Good thing too because winter is nipping right at my tail. I posted the story of yesterday’s snowy paddle, along with a 3 minute video clip over at DevilsLakeWisconsin.com. Here’s the link.
Bad Weather

“Seems you only paddle in wind and bad weather”, that was something someone said to me yesterday when I was launching my kayak for Day 23 of my Devil’s Lake paddle. I thought to myself, “Where were you yesterday?”. The day before the skies were blue, there was no wind and for November, it wasn’t a bad day at all. Thing is, once people feel like they have you pegged.. that’s it. I’m the guy who only paddles in “bad” weather. Continue reading
The Story of Stuff
We were talking about how tough (or not tough) newer kayaks are these days, which brought up a reference to the popular “The Story of Stuff” video. If you’ve not seen it before, take a moment. Better yet, share it. This all fits right in with the point I’m always trying to make about gear; The number one selling point should always be, that it will not need to be replaced in a very long time!
Netarts Bay Incident

I’m certainly not going to wade into the second guessing game that goes on with these sorts of incidents, but if you’re a sea kayaker or coach it would be worth your while to read this incident report about the events of October 4th in Netarts Bay off the coast of Oregon. Personally, I only have two rather general impressions; The first is that I feel for the author of the report, I totally hear where he’s coming from. Secondly, the sea is very big and we are very small. Nothing brings that closer to home than when we’re trying to solve a scary problem out there.
